When my burm was reluctant to eat yesterday I got rather worried because you see, she ALWAYS eats-even during shed. So, I examined both her and the terrarium and realized that the heat lamp isn't providing a large enough basking spot for her fat a--...behind. Anyways, I was wondering if the ceramic coil heaters that use a light socket would be better for this. Rather than going out and buying another heat lamp or uth etc...I would like to know if these are worth buying(not to mention I am reluctant just because they cost about twice as much as a bulb). Until I figure out what appliance to buy I have just put a platform in so that she can get closer to the light.

Also, she did eat later on in the evening, after a nice warm bath.

Hey flood, blood still flows in a snake. If she can get a good portion of her body in there the warmer blood will carry down to her fat a__. Does she spend alot of time under the heat or does she stay on the cool side? Or is she so big that she takes up everything no matter where she goes. Do you have a UTH? If so what kind? If not I'd go out and by a human heating pad and put it under the tank on the warm side. Depending on the substrate you'll have to determine the setting. But you can slide the UTH down a little if you want. How big is the cage? I'm just trying to help you not by the bulb. I've never used it but I know snakes need some heat for there belly for proper digestion. This will bump the heat up quite a bit.....

She spends 95% of her time directly under the lamp. The problem is, the lamp only seems to keep a small spot at a constant 86 - 88 degrees. Considering that she is over 4.5 ft long, two or three inches of heat is not very effective. I have a human heating pad that I could use, but whenever I do the cats want to get on it(the only time that they bother the snakes).

Kitty would turn snbake into a mangled mess. 25 lb cat.
I know whgat you mean with the heating pad but I would prefer if the cats wouldn't paw at the tank. Regardless though, I am getting a 25 gal for my rock python that is in a 40(way too big for it but that is what it came in when I rescued it)and the burm will get the 40 with better heating. But I still want to know about these coils, as far as I've heard, they last a good five or six years before burning out. So it may be worth the extra money if they work good.
