Well, I took my mom to the VA show this past Sunday so that she could see some of the variety out there. After looking around the show for a couple of hours, we were making the rounds to the final tables we hadn't seen. That's when she found an albino burm baby. The guy running the table let us handle her (Mom held her first snake!). She fell in love with Josephine (Mom named her before she'd even paid the man! lol) and we went home with her (credit cards strike again!). The deal is that I keep her at my house with my collection and Mom comes by and plays with her. She's got a really sweet disposition and seems to love being handled (a good thing because I thought Mom was going to rub her scales off Sunday lol). She also eats great on f/t mice even though she's been raised on live mice. I'll be switching her to rats before much longer (she's on rodentpro jumbo mice right now). She's roughly 2 months old, around 2 feet long and really nice colors - orange and golden yellow on a clear white background. I have to admit she's the prettiest albino burm I've seen at any of the recent shows. She was also the most striking out of the litter. Can you tell I'm a proud assistant mom? What's really amazing about this situation is that in the 10-11 years I've been keeping boas and pythons, Mom has never held ANY of my snakes even though she'll pet them while I'm holding them. Wth this little girl, Mom wanted to hold her right off. I'm so proud of her. I'll post pics whenever I can lay hands on a camera. My brother was going to loan me his digital but it's acting screwy right now. Just my luck.

The true test will be if mom still wants to handle her next year when she's over 8' long and 30+ pounds...

Yep, that will be the true test once Josephine is a big girl. Before I let my Mom purchase her (boy does that sound funny!), I made sure she understood how big Josephine would get and the size enclosure she would need, etc. etc. etc. Even though I'm the one that is providing the care and she will be kept in my home, I didn't want Mom to think she would stay little and easy to handle for long. It was basically a discussion of whether I was okay with having such a large constrictor in my home and providing care for it and was Mom still going to be willing to pet her little punkin' head when she's 12'+ long. Needless to say, all parties agreed. Mom has seen a full size burm before. My best friend & neighbor has a 12'+ female normal phase burm that I took Mom over to see some months back. So Mom knows what Josephine will look like size wise in just a few years. I go out to my Mom's every week or so and will be taking Josephine with me on most of those weekends - at least while she's a size I can still easily manage her. After that, Mom will have to come to Josephine.

Raven,
They must have been pumping something in the air at that show
My mother in law is now insistent on owning some chameleons and beardies and she did not muc hcare for any herps prior to the show.
I am now in the process of buillding a cage to house a couple of veils

Thanks for the welcome (or welcome back lol), Trina. I don't get to play here as much as I'd like but I've been here a while.
I think you may be right, Stormy. They had to be pumping something in the air. I was never allowed the scaly & legless pets when I was growing up and didn't get any until I was on my own. It took years for her to pet any of the snakes though she really took to an iguana I used to have. You could have knocked me down with a feather though when she took Josephine out of my hands. I was pretty tickled to have my Mom sharing in my obsession, I mean, hobby. I can see more cages in my future, too. She also liked the bearded dragons, collared lizards, geckos, emerald tree boas, green tree pythons, albino ball pythons and piebald ball pythons (she's always had expensive tastes - funny it translates to the snakes, too!). Some of those are cost prohibitive right now, but I have a feeling there will be at least one or two more that she thinks we 'need'. Does this sound familiar to anybody? lol

Congragulations on the new addition. Wish everyone was like your mother. But like J_Riley said, wonder if she'll still handle her once she gets huge.

It's taken her a while to come around to snakes. I was really surprised how she took to this one - but Josephine is a real sweetie. I don't know how much, or if, Mom will handle her once she's really large. She been told how big Josephine will get and she's seen my friend's burm and right now is comfortable with the idea. Who really knows if she'll feel the same way when she's face to face with a really large burm. Only time will tell, I guess. Either way, Josephine will never want for a home so long as I'm around. Though I'd never planned on purchasing a burm of my own - at least not unless it was a rescue - I couldn't get rid of her now that I've gotten attached to her. Even if my Mom didn't know exactly what she was getting into, I did.
