A Story....

[X-Factor]

I was bored yesterday afternoon so I went scouting for a pet store to peruse their herp setups and see what they had. I ended up finding a PetCo and started talking with the employee there. He seemed fairly knowledgable, which is rare in PetCo employees IME. He opened up the BP cage and let me handle a few of them, most were about 8mos to a year old, great looking snakes. The one that I handled was a very curious 20" male, he would not stop exploring my arms...lol. Employee decided to pick one up (properly yet ignoring the obvious aggressive signs) and it immediately got cagey and almost struck him. I noticed the body posturing and stance and mentioned it. Employee agreed and put it back down. I looked closer and saw the beginnings of shed. All this time I'm still playing with the one male (fun little guy!). All of a sudden two random customers come into the isle and without so much as ASKING or petting just GRAB the aggressive shedder RIGHT OUT OF THE CAGE and proceed to just screw around in the isle, getting very stupid. Employee and I were just stunned. Finally the poor guy was put back in the cage (roughly) and they left.
Several things were learned during this visit:
1) The general public is more ignorant than I thought possible.
2) PetCo MAY know how to house BPs after all.. This particular PetCo had ample temp/humidity guages and I was observing them and noticed that the overall tank humidity was at only 35% and the CAGE WIDE temps were at about 85F (no warm/cool sides). I was shocked, and yet the 5 BPs in the cage were very lively and seemed very happy. I asked Employee why it is that PC is so intent on using possibly untreated Aspen for substrate, and he said its "corporate policy" and that he didn't agree with it either.

That's my story. Thoughts? Comments? Anyone else have a similar experience?

1. some body would have left the store in a cast if I saw that!
2. Glad to know some Petcos know what their doing

4. All Petcos are SUPPOSED to have temp and humidity gauges, SUPPOSED,
