Does anyone have any experience with the Irian Jaya?
I have found a lot of information on the care and keeping but nothing about "personality".

well,
are you talking about Irian Jaya carpet pythons?
there are other species of python on that Island.
They are pretty standard, as far as Indo-Aus pythons go,
and be skeptical if people tell you they only get a 3-4 feet, I had a male get to a little over 6 and Im fairly positive there wasnt any other M.spilota influence mixed in.

Sorry.....
I was referring to the Irian Jaya CARPET Python.
I was looking for some opionions and personal experience with them. Such as are the aggressive or docile, good eaters, things like that. Finding the real information about the snake is more difficult to find out than things like the substrate, temps, and humidity.

Well, as I said they do well with standard python care,
a appropriately sized hide box, large water bowl, basking spot around 88 degrees.
Food once every week or so, and a appropriately sized cage.
There really isnt much more to know about them,
as far as their temperments, snakes have their individual habits,
a species of snake is not more prone to being aggressive, there are other variables that will determine their termperment. I have seen aggressive corn snakes, and BCC/BCI, and I have even had aggressive ball pythons.
It all depends on the snakes background, wc snakes are naturally more nervous.
some snakes are more timid,
I think its more of an individual thing than a species thing
thats just my observation though,
others may feel differently about that.
I have seen very tame I.J. carpets, but mine were not all that tame, but that was because I didnt handle them as much.
Basically what im saying is,
if you get a baby I.J. carpet, it may start out nippy, but when it gets used to you, it will tame down.
just like most other snakes can/will.

Thanks for the information!
All of my snakes get handled regularly... and I plan to keep my collection small enough so I can handle all of them. So I guess an IJ would be alright for me then.... thier coloring is awesome and size is perfect... not too big and not too small.
I was just trying to make sure that the IJ's were not notoriously nippy as are some of the arboreal types of boids.
Now the big decsion.... the IJ Carpet, and Argetine Boa, or a Hogg Island for the next endeavour.

Thanks again for the information!

thats a tough choice,
all nice snakes to have.
Carpets are cool snakes, but it sounds like you cant go wrong any way you go.
good luck.

I agree on the all snakes are cool!
i will probably wait until the show in Richmond, VA and put my hands on some snakes and decide there.
I really like the looks of the IJ's though.

Hey Stormy I haven't had hand's on with that local but I do have a Jungle Carpet Python and he is great! Never been nippy at all he eat's well. You'll notice they are kind of restless being handled and tend to try to crawl off or wrap their tail's around thing's when being lifted. Carpet Python's are definately a good impressive pythons!

I looked at and held some carpets and an IJ tonight.
They are impressive but I fell in love with the IJ.
I am going to try to hold out until October at the Richomd show before buying though.

Well, you've got some tough choices there. If you're concerned about size, an Argentine boa can get quite large. But I can tell you that hog island boas and carpets rock. I've never owned an Irian Jaya, but I do have a Jungle Carpet, and she is a feisty character. I own 3 hoggs, and they are great snakes also. As telefrag said, snakes' individual temperaments do vary, but many species are prone to have tendencies in temperament. Most carpets do tend to be nippy when young, and some grow out of it w/ age, but I've found that IJ's tend to be more docile than Jungles. It's a pretty tough choice you've got there. Here's what I would do, get one of each.
