Hello all-
Well, I sent my boyfriend to the pet store last night to get a rat and what did he come home with????
A rat, yes, and a baby albino burm.....
He said isn't it cute?? After laughing for about ten minutes I asked what, if anything, he knew about them. Surprise to me!!! He knew more than I did about them ( he and his brother had them as teenagers, and his brother still has them)
So, onto the question part of this FAQ. Should she eat adult mice or pup rats? I have heard that for boas rats are better health-wise, is that the case for pythons too? That is really my only question...unless you all have suggestions on names. We thought of Crayola and Dakota but are not set on anything. I guess it is off to do more research (its a good thing our new house has so many extra rooms ). Seriously, I need some help on her(pretty sure) name.
I'll post pics soon.
Thanks guys----Trina

As long as the python is big enough to eat the rat pups, (and a burm always is) it's much better than a mouse as it has less fat and is higher in calcium and protien. Can't wait to see the pics...

Definately. Rats are a lot more nutritous than mice are.

P.S. I'm a regular now!!!! Yay, no more newbie title (even though I feel like one now with this python)

get a grip on his cc's etc before he really messes your accounting up on ya. Most men are like that ya know [ Hey i speak from experience ya know ]
As for the burm... Rats like others have said would be the prefered prey. Also...Don't go and stock up on one size either, burms grow fast

Speaking of them growing fast......
I read 3 books and one of them said 5 feet the first year this can't be right can it? None of the others mentioned size except as an adult. Anyone know if that is even close to being right?
Thanks.

I think that probably is right; I don't keep pythons, but I know of one nine footer that's two years old.

Burms will grow as much as their body will let them. Feeding is a factor also. When I first bought my burms they were 7mos. old and 2ft long. 6 mos. later they were a little over 8ft. Julius has a burm that is a few yrs old and he's not that big. It all depends on the snake.

I had to think about the cc's too from Lori, but being as when I read it I was puting away his cradit cards in the desk, I lmao. Ok, I am looking forward to getting to play with my new girl. Only 7 more days until she has "settled", even though I will probably take her out Thurs or Fri....it is killing me not to have even touched my newest family member.
She was not in the mood last night after the long car trip to be messed with, she just ate yesterday morning, so to be safe we just put her alone in her new house and haven't messed with her since.
I am excited though She's going to be a beauty queen I can tell.

LOl jam ! cc's aren't the prey item , but they will eat away.. at available funds that is hahahahaha
As for the growth rate of the burm. I have heard of many different things, all basically relating to HUGE growth as compared to others like BOAS. general concensus usually seems to fall in the 7-10' area from what I have seen/heard though for the first year. Like others have said.. a lot really depends on the feeding regime of the snake too.

OMG!!!!!!!
What did I get myself into??
I knew they got big, but I was unaware of how fast they grew when they were young.
Looks like a trip to Home Depot (again) *sigh*, I think I am going to win an award soon for the best non-contractor customer they have, I must say though I am glad that I took wood shop in high school over Home-ec now. LOL At least I can build some nice tanks and stuff for my new friends. Thank heaven for the wonderful world of too much free time and a time-consuming hobby. I also think that my boyfriend may be sleeping on the couch tonight after I redo our budget for this new addition to our family.

Is it a Male or Female. I have a Male that is almost 18 months old and he is just now getting to 5 foot. I just got him about 3 months ago so I don't know about how he was fed or anthing but he was very healthy (according to vet) so I think it just depends on the snake. I feed him a med to large rat ( depends on who you ask on sizes) rodent pro would call it a large about every 10 to 14 days. Sometimes he will not eat at 10 days but will take anything I put in there by the 14th day.I'm hoping he will continue to grow this slow and stay on the smaller side of Burms...lol
BUT, since you have to build sometime anyway, I would go ahead and make it BIG

Hey now!!! It's just that men can spot a good deal when they see one! ...And obviously the "little" snake needed a good home, and just as obviously seems to have found one. Your man appears to be a fine, caring, compassionate sort...and I think you should give his cc back to him!!!
