I'm sorry your vet gave you wrong information. The saying goes "deader is better". Freezing prevents the spread of those things mentioned, parasites.
You can kill the rat by slinging it against a wall, putting a stick or pencil behind the neck and jerking up on its tail to break the neck, either way. After it is dead you can throw it in a freezer for next weeks feeding while you wait for your supply to be shipped or look for a local supplier.

There are quite a few places. Call around to other vets also. http://herpvetconnection.com/ and see if any in your area know of any local breeders who freeze them for sale. My supplier is a local reptile vet who no longer practices but does the rodent breeding.
