C.H.E. - Fire Hazard?
I just got a ceramic heat emitter and the papers inside says to use the zoo-med clamp light to prevent a fire hazard. I bought a clamp light dome thing from Wal-Mart that has a porceline (spelling?) socket like the zoo-med and has a watt rating of 650 watts. Does anyone here use anything other then the zoo-med clamp light with a c.h.e.? I just want to be safe and not burn down the house or anything.

As Jem Scout says as long as its porcelain then it should be alright, their are quite a few manufactures of edison screw mount porcelain fixtures that fit and point in a multitude of different ways / directions. So if you don't want a clip on one, then you can get alternatives. Make sure you use a guard as the surface temperature of them is rather high.
Cheers

If you burn the house down with something that only emitts about 100F max temperature on anything, then that's got to be some kind of record. Just make sure it isn't touching anything... and even if it was I still bet it wouldn't.

The emitted value is a lot lower than the surface temperature, mine are not the bulb type but work on the same principal. At 8" if not controlled by a thermostat mine will create a temperature of 200 C, the surface temperature at full continuous power is between 600 - 700c. So it would be feasible to start a fire if the incorrect fittings are used. I definitely would not recommend trying the put your hand on a ceramic bulb that was running at full power, or have it contacting something, it always safer to remove the risk than to gamble.
Cheers
Nick

they just say that to m ake you buy another product from them.... any porceline socket with a rating higher than the wattage required for the emitter is fine... also use some type of gaurd if your reptiles are able to come in contact with it

That's what I'm thinking they do. Buy this that is also made by us. I have a screen top under it so the snake can't come in contact with it. Thanks.
