Plastic Snake Housing
I have recently spoken to a guy at a Pet Store that has been working with snakes for 8+ yrs and he houses his snakes in basiclly rubbermaid containers (with air holes) and uses a heating pad on the bottom to maintain the temps. He said that has worked great for as long as he has been dealing with snakes. Now I have 2 BPs that have glass cages with a heating mat and a top light on a timer which has been great. Obviously the price difference is HUGE between rubbermaid and a glass cage. I want to get more (well and more) snakes, but the size and cost of the glass cages is something to consider. Can I use rubbermaid containers with a good heating pad (from the pet store not one for people) and do my snakes right? Also do I need overhead heating with the snakes as well? I have seen many a rack systems with plastic cages and no over head heating - just bottom heating pads. I want to properly care for my snakes. Advice please! Thanks for your time.

i have been told by a person i know who keeps many BPs and she swears by the totes with just a heating pad. she says the heat lamp really dries them out. my BP is in a glass tank but that is because i love to watch him.

i currently am keeping my baby boa in a rubbermaid thats really big but i have found a good place to get good plastic containters that a really transparent so it doesnt affect your veiwing as much as rubbermaids her is the link prices are pretty good and great compared to glass. I would also recomend a human heat pad from cvs or any drug store usually caries them but be sure that it doesnt have a safety off. Heres the link i may be buying one soon.

just some advice...if your looking at the reptile tubs site, and wanting to purchase one from there, look at a local retail store first. all they are is basically the xmas tree boxes. saves a ton of money

Hello,
Yeah, they just come with a colored lid. Also, you can use a human heat pad if you would like with the rubbermaids, the pet store brand heat mats dont usually get hotter than 75 F or so. My rubbermaid has a human heat pad on low and its keeping a nice gradient between 78 F and 90 F.

I use tubs for all of my snakes, but Hades (30 gallon) and my new female BP
(10 gallon). I'm actually selling the 30 gallon to put him in a big xmas tree tub. I keep Chimera and Kozma in them as well. They hold humidity and temps well, are very easy to clean, and if secured with binder clips, leave no room for escape. I bought the biggest size for Chimera for $9 at Wal-Mart. Can't beat that with a stick. I use a human heating pad for Chimera too Josh. I love the different settings. High on a cold day, medium on a warmer day.
