ESU Jungle Mix Substrate ??
I was thinking of getting some jungle mix substrate from esu because it is supposed to be great for keeping high humidity levels and you can plant plants in it and stuff it is a mixture of different things such as peat and tree moss, fine sand, sterilized organic soil, vermiculite, and orchid bark. It is sold by Drs. FosterSmith and ESU would it be a sutible substrate or would it hold bacteria to? the Drs.FosterSmith catologe say it is a perfect substrate for forest and tropical pets. Thought i would ask before i bought. Thanks

i would be cautious, most substrates that hold high humidity hold high bacteria...... if you can bake it and then use it, it might be okay. I'm not an expert though....

Put it in the oven for a while, kills anything that may be living in it like bacteria, mites and parasites. I think 250 for an hour usually does it.

it's a good substrate---if you buy it go to reptile direct though--it's cheaper there

This sounds like a good deal. I'm all for an environment that will make the snake feel more at home. I doubt the jungle has newspapers laying all over the place. What would be cleaning procedures for this though? Would you have to remove all substrate or just areas around where the snake poo'd. I like the idea of puting plants in that keep humidity and temp controlled, but they would not last long if you were uprooting them every week. What would you guys recomend for that??

i have him on zoo meds repti bark now and i spot clean and empty substrate and bleach once per month, with a 30% water, 10% bleach solution and rinse very very good, then i replace old substrate with new. and as far as plants i think as long as you keep the roots moist while you have them out of the substrate then it will do fine but i am no plant expert lol
thanks for the post

with plants it can be a mini ecosystem with the snake poo acting as a fertilizer
