Why are his scales doing this?
My 1.0 bp's scales (underside) seem to be peeling. What is the cause of this, and is it dangerous?

after i noticed it, i gave him an 82 degree bath for an hour (that was as long as he would tolerate it) and then rubbed him down with "Zoo Med repti shedding aid," thinking that maybe it might help. it seemed to help a little but, but that was like two days ago, and he seems to be right back where we started.

My other question in mind is, do you have a heat rock in the tank? If so, take it out, don't finish reading this first. Just do it. If there is a rock, its probably burning the underside of him.
Just a quick note from looking at the photo.

I know exactly what you are talking about peeling of scales. This is quite common in pythons where it seems as if the top layer of sheen is comming off the scale. I've owned several snakes in the past that have done this (pythons). The ssems to be no ill effects from this other than comming off on your hands usally goes away with the next shed.

no heat rock. i've never used one. i did however just start using a substrate heater (under tank type). i keep it running at 82degrees, so it can't be burning him. it's right under his hot-side hide box (and it seems that thaat's the one he prefers). i have an incandescent heat lamp (temp @ 86) running from 10am-2pm, and a ceramic (temp @ 84) running from 6am-8pm. (i also use a full spectrum, but i know from what MANY have told me that my bp garners no benefit from it, i just like how it makes him look).

I'm sorry, I failed to mention something!
This bp is an adult, and is approximatly 4 ft long.
He has been raised from a baby with ABSOLUTELY NO HEATING, of any kind! I bought him a few months ago, and have been slowly.....oh so slowly, raisng his tank temp (i'm terrified of shocking him).
My next project is to get him taking f/t food (previous owner said that he tried, but I strongly question the husbandry of someone who uses no "life support" equipment. [i'm writing and bought the animal in Maine!]).
So do you think this "flaking" is the result of shock from just starting to use the substrate heater?
