Walmart carries aspen... in the fish/pets section. Dig around through the bags of pine and cedar, it'll be there somewhere. If not, surely you have a Petco/Petsmart somewhere around there. I would imagine most other smaller stores carry it too, because many rodent breeders are switching to aspen after the big 'aromatic oils' debates of other substrates. You may want to look into Carefresh litter as well... about the same consistency as aspen, not as good for burrowing in, and is ugly as #$%^$%^$%^$%^&, but it does its job.

with petco there's one at...
2500 West International Speedway Boulevard, #900 Daytona Beach, FL 32114
7649 West Colonial Drive, Suite #130 Orlando, FL 32818
and that's it way to far to go just for substrate

SHadow, you in Crestview? My daugther is in Niceville and she used Aspen for her BPs. I can ask her where she got it, I think a local herp shop.
There is Petsmart here in Miami (at least 2 that I know off), so they are in Florida. One is a block from me. If all else fails, I could buy it and send it to you, can't be that heavy.
Hey, also, I might be driving up there in a couple fo weeks, I would be glad to bring it along...
Email me slaponte@hotmail.com if interested.

I am using mixed wood chips (dry and moist). The moist chips help the snake shed and the dry chips balance it out so it isn't to wet.

yeah...there are definitely Petsmarts in FL. I got my 55 gal at the one in Brandon...must be something wrong with their locator. Try the lo-tech method, check the yellow pages.

I really like the CareFresh bedding at petsmart. Really absorbant and economical. Maybe u could order the aspen or whatever bedding u want over the internet straight from the petsmart website

I think ordering bedding would be very expensive, b/c of shipping/weight. Surely there must be some place close to you that has appropriate substrate.... If not, maybe you could settle for newspaper/print/ or paper towels?

Well, I will be driving up in a few days (To the Niceville area, near Ft Walton, Pensacola, by Crestview). Actually, all over Florida since I go Miami -> Orlando -> Gainsville -> Tallahasse -> Niceville.
For those of you in the more "rural" areas of Florida, I have a Petsmart and a Wallmart near my place, so let me know if you need something and I will be glad to drive it up with me.
Don't worry about shipping and handling, it won't be much...

We use newspaper. It's not very pretty but it's cheap and works well.

Newspaper would be very good. I use Nature Bark for my royal right now. Plan on moving over to Aspen soon though. Wal-Mart carries Aspen and I'm pretty sure there is plenty of petstores around FL.

Hey shadow, there's no petco/smart, but there is a petland, it's on mary ester by the movie theatre, and circuit city. but it is a bad, bad place, you don't even want to walk in there. trust me. go over to Rita's pets on eglin pkwy in uptown station for any herp related stuff.
anyway for substrate, I go to wal-mart also, but I use cypress mulch. it holds humidity a lot better, and is way less expensive. it has to be cooked in the oven though to kill all the bad stuff. 200 for a couple hours will do it. make sure to watch it CLOSELY!!!! it can catch fire. -Juggalo
