Ball Python Humidity prob
Hello All,
For the last 2 months the humidity has been a problem here since it's been getting a lot colder. i don't seem to be able to get it any higher than 32. Here's whot i've tryed. Smaller boil with bark in it and damped it. Light sprayed every thing in the tank to. Most of his cage is covered on top to help to keep the humidity in there. His log he has is allso slightly wet too. But since the weather has been much colder it don't seems like the humidity will go up. Summer time it was np at all. i am woundering if the cermatic heat emmiter could be coursing the problem.
Thank You.

what kind of substrate do you use? I use cyrpess mulch for my bp. Still with it being winter and a basking light it does stay a bit lower. I usually mist every morning and I cover half the tank. I've seen alot of folks advise putting the water bowl on or part on the area of the underheater to get humidity from there. make sure you clean it out everyday then so the bacteria doesn't build up. I use an empty butter tub with a small hole cut out and some misted moss in it. With the lid on that the humidity is gonna be higher and Olympias just loves to hang out in there. No incomplete sheds since I've started using that.

I've reused the moss. I buy a decent size bag and then use about two handfuls in the container. Then after he's used it for a bit I take it out, spray in a strainer and stick it in a bag in the freezer to kill anything and then use it again later. I really don't know if that's overkill but he uses that hide so much I want to make sure its not growing anything!

i've also heard of people using humidifiers in the general area of the enclosure in the room to help up the humidity....with care to make sure the humidity doesnt get too high of course. haven't personally tried this but it sounds like it would be practical.

In the two cages (for GTP & WLP) I need a bit higher humidity & maintain a bit higher temps. I use a mister twice per day, and in one of the cages I use a moss box. In those cages I use paper towel as substrate to make sure I don't have any molds or fungi growing. humidity in those cages is between 65%-85%. I also restrict the ventilation (blocking the screen top) somewhat to keep the humidity in- I have had no problems with shedding. hope this helps
I also use Barrs cages (I had too many issues with aquariums)

You might want to check the humidity in the room that you have the enclosure in as well, if the room is very dry, the air will snatch out any humidity you attempt to provide. If this is the case, the humidifier sounds like a good idea. I live in this wet sauna they call Houston, and its almost impossible to escape the humid air, even in your home with the A/C kickin. But I notice you are in PA, when I was in north end of MD, I remember the air being dry, especially in the winter months.

I"ve been having a lousy time with humidity too. It seems either I have the heat lamp on to get the temps up and she dries completely out... or I turn the lamps off and the temps stay at about ambient 70 (but she hangs out under her log which is on top of the UTH) and I feel sick about the possibility of her getting an RI. I have tried the little moss caves but she isn't interested at all. Even if I put her into it she scoots out as quickly as she can. I haven't sprayed b/c I'm afraid I'll start getting mold growing on the reptibark. How has your battle been going AsRock?? Did you find something that did the trick?

In our largest room with animals we've been using a humidifier,,,it keeps the whole room at 50% or a tad more. That's without misting or anything in there and way up from what it would usually be with nothing. beside less static shock it works great for the animals,,if you have something that needs more than just a lite mist should do rather than trying to spray the living day lights out of em!
