So I have decided to ignore all your advise and take the plunge into ARP territory.(not really lol, more an insane cackle)
A batch of ARPs is arriving in Cape Town from Jo'burg next Thursday(30/5). The guy who is bringing them in told me that there would be 2 one-year-olds and about 8 hatchlings. He is adamant that I should buy 2 so that I can breed. He has quite an interesting theory:
he reckons that the burm market is saturated in SA (on the local herp site www.snakes.co.za baby burms are selling for about $30!!!) and that people will want something different with regard to big snakes; hence the breeding of the ARP's.
Problem- he isn't quite sure whether they are the sebae(the beeeg, nasty fellows) or the natilensis(the smaller nasty fellows). If they are sebae, I think that one will be fine, thank you.If they turn out to be Satan's smaller spawn, then maybe.
Any thoughts??
By the way Lori, you have some stunning snakes

Congratulations! Sounds like quite a handful! Do you know whether this lot are captive bred or not? If so, by how many generations? Does anyone know whether the natural aggression of snakes like these are tempered one a few generations have been captive bred? If so, surely "Fourth generation captive" would be significantly preferable to "First"?
I've heard that the patterning of the two varieties are quite different - then again, I've heard of 'grey ones', blotchy ones, stripey ones, etc. Does anyone know how to identify the varieties by sight rather than by size?

Oh well, I've always wanted one so ....
You know that old cliche: be careful what you wish for ....
The one positive is that they are captive bred. I will be going to see them
next saturday, and will keep you posted(or is that threaded)
provided of course that anyone is actually interested
