A plea for help keeping the forums worth reading

I'm asking this as just a member who likes to engage in mind stimulating topics about reptiles. I'm not addressing this issue as an admin/rtbstaff person. I'm also asking as a friend of Shane who has to pay quite a bit for the bandwidth and who works hard keeping the database up. There is just way too much mindless useless drivel going on. Thread after thread of quick responses back and forth where entire conversations about absolutly nothing are just a flood of one or two word responses. We have a chat channel for just such a thing. Please join us there and type all the chitty chat you want. We will let you know when we have heard enough lol. I know we all add a bit of humor or sarcasm or otherwise useless text to a thread now and then and I don't think there is anything wrong with it as long as it is an exception....For some people here it seems to be more the rule.

and the quoting of someone's entire post and then adding just one word of your own is also a bit annoying too!

To me it isn't so much as annoying as ...geeze we have 4000+ members here. If everyone engaged in chitter chat conversations at once, it would destroy the site...the heavier the database gets even with these tiny text files, the slower the site gets to load...not to mention it buries good threads....ok I can see where that is annoying. lol

i think that is what makes this site fun.dont you think it would be boring without it? i think most people like to laugh and have a lighter side to stuff. i hate when people dont answer a thread. i think it is only polite if you start a thread and someone comments that you respond back.

well I personally think that we should just outline exactly what it is that annoys us here on this thread. In the end, none of us will be able to post anything, as it will annoy someone.

Guys, nothing is perfect, and we can't expect a site with 4000 + members to be perfect. There are going to be personalities that annoy someone here no matter what, and as Jules already stated there is going to be some useless posting. I know that I cannot connect to the chat room during the day. Should I assume that you don't want me to visit then, b/c I can't interact? I know that isn't the intention of this post, but it may come off that way to some. We want people to visit and learn, no? Sometimes that useless chatter builds real friendships between people and sometimes it brings up other valid points. Just food for thought.

good point, every time I go (which isn't much) into the chat room, nobody's talking. You'll see the same names up there, but nothing happening. I'm guilty of this because it's just a quick repsonse at the time. But on the same token for example. If a person asks a question, and somebody answeres the question and covers a good majority of the angles, who else is to respond? I mean, usually you see, "yeah, listen to so & so, they know what they're talking about" and that's it. Is it needed, no, all it offers is a reassurance to the original poster that this person who answered with a lengthy post might actually have a clue to the question asked. Did I lose anybody yet? I think you know where I'm going with this. Alot of time, soft flirting happens in the background. Who's gonna miss the chance to flirt a little? You know you'll probably never meet the member, but it's just fun so one line posts go back and forth. That's just from a different perspective. I just don't want to see this site die down like it did in the past. I'm afraid if we start getting shorter posts and less conversational posts, it may die down because we may lose interest if posts lose the fun you know??

i dont think the joking around was the intended target, i think it is about the post like "Nice Pic".

Maybe the post your pic forum should be locked down so as not to be able to reposnd to the original post. This would eliminate all of the "Nice Pic", "Nice Snake" posts, right?

i look at threads with a lot of posts and think "DO I really want to read through 90 replies with most of them being "Nice this" or "Nice that"?" and the answer is, no I dont. SO I read the first few and when the "Nice" posts start I stop.

But I Digress.....

not to be a one liner, but there was only 3 posts when I posted, I didn't read the other 2 before me if my post contradicted theres or supported theres.

i look for posts by certain people like nicole and trinity and thetupak cause i know i will be smiling. everything isnt always cut and dry. i know the site is very important and great info but i like to laugh to. like today when you posted handle bars i actually chocked on my coffee and called my friend to read him it. he didntfind it as amusing as me but everytime i think about it today i have to laugh and smile. another one i read a good 6 months ago. someone asked what to do if thier snake bites them. someone posted shove your hand in thier mouth all the way to thier tail and pull them inside out and they will be facing the opposite direction. i still laugh my butt off at that and added it to my fav. so i can find it!
