For those of you bashing trophy hunting but defending deer hunters, all deer hunters in the US are pretty much trophy hunters. Don't try and justify it by saying that they're hunting for the meat. It's true that many of us do eat and enjoy the meat, but show me someone in this country who NEEDS that deer meat to survive. Being an avid hunter myself, I can assure you that how many points the buck has does not affect the taste at all, yet strangely that's a pretty important part of any deer hunt. If the meat's being eaten and the animal is killed in a humane way what's it to any of you what the hunter had on his mind when he pulled the trigger or loosed the arrow? Way too much judgement flying around in this post. Oh, and gruvinbass... don't try to understand the IL government... the libs in Chicago have screwed us all to forward "the agenda".

East, what we are bashing, is those who would kill an animal, cut off it's head, and the leave the rest lie. Maybe you should go back and read the post again, before you jump in with both feet.
While you may not justify it as they are hunting for the meat, some people actually prefer the taste of venison to beef; me included. As far as I'm concerned you can't argue anything from the point of need. Scientists can put what you NEED into a pill. That's not very fun though is it?
Yeah, I like the bucks with more points, but I shoot a doe EVERY season too for conservation. If I see a deer that must be culled from the herd for whatever reason, I shoot it INSTEAD of my buck (if possible). Ecology and herd mgmt is every hunters responsibility.
I don't see a lot of judgement in this post, but I do see a lot of people talking about THEIR ideas, and everyone is being respectful. BTW...I know A LOT of people that NEED that deer meat. Contact Hunters for the Hungry and ask them how many homeless people are fed with deer meat each year.

Trin, I know what you personally were bashing, but there were posts that specifically regarded that even if the meat was GIVEN to someone after the animal was killed in sport that it was wrong. Perhaps you should take your own advice and go back to read it again. I prefer the taste of venison to beef. I'm a deer hunter. Go back and read my post more carefully. I'm not the one who brought up need in this thread, so I'm going to ignore that part of your post. I'm glad you are a good conservationist. On the hunters for the hungry thing, you say they "NEED that deer meat" but earlier in the same post you said "you can't argue anything from the point of need."
I didn't present any of these ideas... they were already present in the thread.

The animals I detest being taken for sport are the endangered exotic animals not deer. I think I said that. If someone happened to shoot the last female rhino, but gave the meat to the poor, your not going to win any medals or praise from me on that one.
I don't beileve any animal should die on a whim and be wasted. I don't have any knowledge on "The Hunters for the Hungry" That sounds like a wonderful program. To me as long as the animal isn't highly endangered, and the animal doesn't go to waste. Shoot away!!!
Like i said also just not my thing.

Ok, several things. First, easy, guys, we've kept in civilized so far. At one point in my life, yes, I very much needed the meat just to keep myself and my family fed. Not now, fortunately, but at one time, yes, I did.
I cannot think of one hunter that I have ever known who would say they approved of canned hunts, because that isn't hunting. That includes myself. I think there should be some clarification of meanings here, because I think there is some confusion on it. To my mind, hunting for sport is defined as hunting when there is no immediate need for the meat. To me that isn't wrong, assuming the meat is actually used. Whether by the person doing the hunting, or given to Hunters for the Homeless, or just simply a buddy who could use it.

I'm not mad or upset at East. If you took my post as being sarcastic or nasty, it was not meant that way east. Well not most of it anyway. The only comment I meant as sarcastic was the thing about scientists. Our uses of the word "need", I believe, were intended differently. I took yours to mean monitarliy and I meant from a subsitance/nutritional standpoint. I should have clarified that. Anyway, I read it again East, and I stick by what I said.

Mr. Phillips is director of the organization, which last year killed 561 deer that were turned into 100,000 meals for soup kitchens, homeless shelters and food pantries across the state. This coming deer season, the program wants to double production.

This is quoted from an 2001 article on Hunters for the Hungry in Kentucky.

From a monatary standpoint, the homeless need the meat. That was my fulfillment of your request.
I think we are on the same page here.
You called this post judgemental, but this is the way ideas are exchanged. Ed throws his ideas out there, GB throws his out, and so on. We all consider the arguements and make rebuttles, argueing our points. The fact that someone doesn't agree with your viewpoint is not always bad (and that is the tone as I understood it from the statement about a lot of judgement flying around), as differing viewpoints keep things fresh, and new ideas flowing. It's dangerous to just accept an idea and keep doing things that way b/c they always have been done that way. Many feuds end up that way. Years down the road, no one involved can tell you why they fight, except they have always done it that way.
Anyway...I think we are on the same side.

Yeah.... lots of this (from me and from others) was taken the wrong way. Rather than try to explain myself and dig a deeper hole (like I've seen so many do in the past) I'll just ask that you accept my apology, trin. Thanks for keeping it civil, guys.
