Why Do Herpers have multiple captives?
Is it because we get bored with what we have or because we naturally like to expand our knowledge by exploring new species?
I have been asked why I keep adding so many and I find it difficult to explain :scratchchin:

I'd say its a little of both. To a certain extent we get used to or bored with what we have and want something new to mix things up a bit. Many also like to learn more about the husbandry etc... of a new species.

1. Because I wanted her.
2. Because my housemate wasn't allowed to handle #1, therefore #2 came along to 'spread the handling load'.
3. I fell in love with her when getting #1 and requested from the breeder that I be able to have her when she finally started feeding. So tiny, so cute.
4. Arrived with #3 as she had nowhere else to go, after 'babysitting' for two weeks, there was no-where else I wanted her to go.
5. This little baby had no-where else to go, I had room. Besides, she was sweet.
6. I got curious about different species and this one was available.
7. The above curiousity had positive results, so another species was sought and aquired, sadly, this little one had problems and didn't survive.
8. Well c'mon, you can't watch a clutch hatch and not claim one for your own... so cute peeking out from that egg...
9. This one was deliberately sourced, to replace the hole left by #7.
10. Another species, more curiousity, and so darn cute.
11 & 12. These two adults belonged to a friend for a very long time, so when he said he was getting 'out of snakes', rather than have them disappear forever, I decided to take them into 'care' for the day he wants them back.
13. Was a tag-a-long due to 11 & 12 coming with multiple cages, one being the home #13 was in.
14 & 15. A foray into lizards. Surely they would have to be fun and no more trouble than snakes? Bad move, never again.
The 'Transients'. Somebody has to care for those that need it on a temp basis, I have the time, the resources and the interest.
... When I made the decision to get the first snake, I locked myself into mega multiple years of caring for an animal. It made no difference from that point onwards how many of those animals I had. Every home I lived in, every place I went would need the same requirements for one as for several. I would have to be around for one anyway, may as well make the number worthwhile.
I have room in my heart for a lot more, however I do appear to be running out of floor space ...

I was sitting around one day looking at my boas, burm and ball python several years ago and thought...ugh all my snakes are brown and black. I need some color in this collection. So I got some various specatcularly colored colubrids and then went arboreal to add some green. I don't really have that many snakes that are here by my choice. Most kinda get here on their own somehow.

Dave:
If you notice though, most herpers have herp rooms filled with animals/cages etc--collections.
People most of the time have one or 2 cats/dogs (except for my mother in law who is known as the cat woman of Tarlton Street)--it just seems people who like snakes have like---racks of snakes.
And people who are not herpers think herpers are basically nuts when they see all the cages and equiptment.
