Going into the herp room at night when they are most active and shining a flashlight to see what they are up to
The way they flick their tongues whenever there are changes or movements in their surroundings
The way they curl up in your hands or your lap, and go to sleep for what seems like an eternity
Different personalities of each individual
The various preferences of each individual on how they want their meal to be served
Their adaptability to life without arms and legs
The way they are able to scarf food down that seem proportionately large to the size of their heads and no other animal can do the same
The differences in coloration and pattern between each of my snakes
The way nobody else can look at these snakes and tell who's who
Looking in a tub with a snake that has gone off-feed for a while, and expecting to find a rat, only to find nothing but a snake with a full belly
Ratsnakes who put on a show that says, "I'm big and mean. If you come any closer, you'll wish you hadn't!"
Those same ratsnakes that don't put up a fight when you pick them up
Taking in a rescue, marking it off for freezer bait...then a few months later, you look at the same snake and think "Wow, this one has improved so much."
Looking at your big, beautiful adult snakes, and remembering when you got them as tiny babies
Finding an old water bowl or hidebox for your adult, and wondering how they ever fit in this thing at one time
The way non-herp people look at my JCP and say "Wow, she's pretty....for a snake"
The way herpers look at my JCP, and try to work out a trade for her. Only to find out they won't be able to pry her from my cold, dead hands
The way kids who aren't sure if they should be afraid of snakes, and are suddenly amused when they finally handle or touch one
The same kids who look forward to handling them again, and ask me how they are doing
