Which digicam?
Ok, I have been contemplating saving up for a digital camera. Thing is, I am looking for one that does some good pics for a price that isn't insanly high. Any suggestions?

hey there - i got a digi cam for my birthday and my dad is a 'consumer's report' NUT. he got me a Canon PowerShot A70 cuz 'consumer's report' said it was one of the best ones for the money. you should be able to get it for $250-$300. it's an awesome camera and has so many functions and takes great pics. it's very light and the batteries last forever. it has a total of 10x optical zoom
everything i've read about digital cameras has said that brand doesn't especially matter, but you should get one that has at least 3 megapixels. under 3 megapixels and the pics suck (trust me). 4 or more megapixels and you're gonna pay at least $400. you should also get one with at least a 3x optical zoom - it's the best kind of zoom (smoother and gets in smaller).
so if you wanna take pics good enough to print or post online but you don't wanna spend a lot i'd get one with 3 to 4 megapixels, and at least a 3x optical zoom.
EDITED TO SAY: yeah macro zoom rocks! but if you're wanting to save money, you don't really need it.

Oh come on JS, I'm sure you must have an opinion on this. Being that you are a photographer and everything.

Check out overstock.com for camera deals...They usually have refurbished cameras at awesome prices. I got a Nikon Coolpix 2500 from them that works great and looks brand new.

We have a camcorder like you are talking about. The still pics from ours are actually really good...when there is a whole lot of light. No flash, so don't think you are gonna provide your own light.

you are correct about the 5x7's boaman - thanks for clarifying. a 2 megapixel wouldn't be bad if you jus want smaller pics. i am glad my dad got the A70, though, cuz i can take up to, like 1248x1000 (or something like that) pics! it's awesome! and the vids mine takes are great, too (i assume the vid quality is the same for the A60).

I'm a big fan of the Nikon Coolpix 5700...don't know if that falls into the "insanely high" price category, but well worth it IMO.

Go Canon or Nikon..... I had the Coolpix 2100 and it was nice camera around $200. 2.1 MP and had some nice featuers including Macro. The downside is that it ate up batteries and was slow to record images when using the flash. Under normal conditions the pics were great. We finally moved up to a Canon Digital Rebel though... wanted more capabilities and the functions that an SLR would give us.
Awesome pic KLG
