Which species? There are two referred to as the sunbeam snake, those of the genus Xenopeltis and those of the genus Loxocemus. My guess would be Loxocemus... they're much more common - and if the shop owner doesn't know, he shouldn't have it. Anyway, it is unlikely it has scale rot, Loxocemus are burrowers and spend most of their time in the mulch layer of soil. As they get older they will naturally get splotches and weird marks all over their otherwise solid colored skin. Its something perfectly normal. As long as the scales themselves do not look damaged, its probably fine. I think one would have to keep them in pretty disgusting conditions to for one to get scale rot though.

I had one a few years back and they're great little guys. If it's a sunbeam then it's probably not scale rot (per se)... it's similar but not the same... scale rot is usually too much humidity but in sunbeams they get scale issues from not having enough humidity. Give them moist deep substrate like cypress... and they usually turn around quickly and east great even when wild caught... don't mess with them often they are super shy...
wait just thought of something are you talking about the new world sunbeam snake or the old world? i'm referring to the old world snake...
i think a better description of the set up and the snake would help figure out some care tips for the little guy...

Its a new magical thing where you go herping in breeder's facilities, and anything you can grab and run away with is then 'captive caught'.

Sorry to say it louise, but your nephew sounds like the pet stores all animal lovers dread, complain about and want shut down. A little education wouldn't kill him, and would make him a better shop owner in the long run and thus would make him more money in the long run.

Rav
