Hey hey:
My fiance and I are starting to look for a place to live, and I was curious if anyone knows of a place (not hugely expensive) on Long Island, NY that excepts herps. This sparked my curiosity b/c in another post someone said that it was a pain to find a place that excepts snakes....and I have a few!! And there is no way that I'm getting rid of them!! I figured that all the places that say "No Pets" means dogs and cats. Not birds and herps.
Anyone?????
Thanks!!

Actually what i have found over the years is this..
They don't ask...You don't offer the info..is the best way to go about it . Could also just ask if they allow "fish tanks" .. Just don't mention what ya keep in em is all.. hehe
The thing is.. If you mention the reptiles, they will prohibit them somehow. Clear as that ! They do not generally list herps in a lease but if they even think of such , they will do it. Sorry but that is the reality of the situation. There are some landlords that don't have a problem with the herps at all being kept. You prolly won't know till ya ask. Ya just gotta decide what route your taking is all with it....

Pythonchick,
We've lived in our apartment for coming up on 9 years now. And I know for certain in our apartments we are allowed to have most anything BUT cats and dogs. In fact, my manager was over just the other day to admire the herps and in fact I'll probably be setting her up with something in the next few weeks. They even allowed me to have a ferret, and I live in California.. We've gone through many managers over the years.. but they have all been real cool..
But I agree with Lori.. just ask if they allow fish tanks.. If they do.. Your home free. Lets face it.. 9 times out of 10, people keep Most smaller reptiles in fish tanks.
I even have a free roaming iguana that is extremely well behaved, and my managers don't care.
Good luck, and happy apartment hunting.

For one thing, Lori's method sounds like it'd work pretty well. I've never tried it, though. When I'm looking at apartments, I'm straightforward w/ the landlords about what I keep, if they say no, then they aren't getting my business. If they seem hesitant, but say okay, then that's really your choice. If you're lucky, you'll find a landlord who's totally cool about it. I'm in pretty good standing w/ my landlord so I have nothing to worry about in having to get rid of my snakes for as long as I live here.
When I first came here, maintenance left notes saying they were not warned about the snakes and that they'd have to discuss it with the landlord. Well, when I brought it up w/ her, she just said "*bleep* them, keep all the snakes you want. If they do anything to them, they'll have to answer to me." She told the maintenance workers about my snakes, and they've since left me alone. If I see one of the workers on the premises, I almost always get a few questions about the snakes. Some of them hold the snakes, a few won't hold them but will touch them, and a couple just admire them from a distance. But so far, I've not gotten any negative actions towards my snakes. They know they gotta answer to the boss if somebody does something to them. Okay I'm getting off-track here. Just do a bit of searching, and you should find a few places within your price range that allow your choice of animals. Best of luck. YUP..Might take a bit longer, BUT it is possible to find. The biggest problem is that since you do not know the person[ landlord] prior to looking at the apartment...Your not going to know what their stance is in relation to reptiles. IF you bring it up and they are someone who's afraid of reptiles, then don't count on getting that apt too quickly. Somethimes you could be kicking yourself in the arse when you are simply being honest and inquiring about the terms in relation to having reptiles in the apartment is all. One other thing you could do is if your interested in an apartment..ask to see a copy of the lease you will be asked to sign to go over it prior to any deposits/decisions etc. Just look for the pets clause in it is all. Then you will know what their stance is in relation to such prior to asking questions. Keep in mind that most leases don't even mention reptiles in them, so if you mention them you may just be opening a can o worms for yourself is all.

Just dont tell them and if they find out and try to take action, tell them the last place you were evicted from mysteriously burned down less than a week later and the apt managment staff was never found.

HAHA. Very funny Julius! But something tells me that they would press charges against me instead of my herps if I said that!
Thanks for all the info. We were thinking along the same lines as far as not saying anything to the landlord. They can't come in your apartment at anytime to check it out like they do in college, can they???? Do they schedule routine "check ups" for apartments?
My fiance's sister's live in apts, but they never talk about any of this stuff! Plus, they live in REALLY expensive places. ($1300/month!). Good 'ol NY. Gotta love those expensive apartment complexes that don't include utilities and don't allow pets!
If anyone knows of a place in tbe Long Island area, PLEASE let me know!!
Thanks!!!!

Don't know about NY BUt around here in our state ..NO they can not just "come around" and want to come into your apt. . There is such a thing as privacy..sometimes. They actually have to give you at least a 48 hour notice that they want to come into the apt and can only do such so many times a year also..like 2 x's I think it is. Unless of course it's an emergency..then they can enter without you even knowing ahead of time.
$1300 ain't that bad..I used to pay 950 up to 5 years ago for a 2 bedroom hehe

I live in apartment, and have never had any problems. I know the managment knows I have reptiles in there because the maintenance talks about them to people all the time. there is no mention of reptiles in the lease at all. but they must know because of the maintence guys, and the fact that I have a corner apartment with many windows that all glow red at night. I think they just don't care. -Juggalo

One of the things that I have heard as far as finding homes/apartments with pets is to have a 'pet resume' That is mainly for dogs, cats and the like, but what if you took some nice quality photos of your well secured cages and a brief written description of housing, species, etc. Maybe the show of knowledge and good care could sway an 'iffy' response to a welcome one. Make sure that the cages are spotless, have proper latches/locks and are attractivly decorated. Maybe if they can see the effort you have made to alleviate their fears and concerns, they may be a bit more open-minded. Couldn't hurt.
Good luck!

The way I see it is: If apartment complexes allow tennants to have dogs or cats, then they will allow reptiles too. They can NOT discriminate against any one particular thing. I would say go ahead and rent a place where pets are allowed and if you ever receive any kind of notice or complaint, then tell them that once you see ALL pets removed then you will do the same. Otherwise you will sue for discrimination.
