Western Hognose Bite
Check out the following page: http://www.herpnet.net/bite/
I've been bitten (feeding response) by both eastern and western hognose snakes, but didn't experience anything as severe as what is shown in the photos. Anyone else been bit by a hog, if so what was your experience?

Was the bite a defensive bite or a feeding response?

He let the thing chew on him for 3-5 minutes...I would think it would be that bad after that long. Cool link though...very interesting.
Was yours a bite and release, John?

Anyone have a photo of their "enlarged" rear teeth or "supposed rear fangs" or better yet a skull or skull photo? I look down the gullet of every one I catch that isn't too seemingly stressed at being handled for the first time ( pretty rare occurance I can assure you living amongst the skittish easterns) I found a melanistic hognose freshly roadkilled last year at the camping trip and had a great opportunity to get a better look at the teeth but he was a small snake...maybe 18 inches and a little thicker than my thumb...but still, I didn't see any teeth I would call enlarged. Also....for as long as I can remember, I have tried and tried to get them to bite me cause I want to see how bad it is before letting my son or anyone else finds out...they just won't bite me for some reason.

Don't think I've ever been bitten in a defensive manner by a hognose snake. Most strikes by wild snakes were done with mouth closed or just way off target. The few time I have been bit were intentional SFE and I let the hog chew for a while just to see what would happen. It was my experience that the bites were no more significant than that of a rat snake or a kingsnake.
