Actually any large snake: Burmese, African Rock, Green Anaconda (all of which I have between 6-11 feet) and Reticulated Pythons (the big four for length and size) can be a danger to an adult once greater than 8 feet and it is recommended to have two people available. Considering they get much larger especially. Usually incidents of death occur during what is termed "Stupid Feeding Incidents" (SFI) where the prey is hand fed or the smell of the prey is on the victim and the snake decides that the warm human is better than that slightly warmed up rabbit. Doesn't mean that the snake has a chance to swallow said victim. I had a baby Brooks Kingsnake on Christmas day think that the top of my ear was the greatest looking pinkie mouse ever. The other type of incident is where the snake is free roaming thru the house and latches on to a child usually. An 8 year old didn't have a chance with a 10 Ft Burmese. Ball Pythons and others don't get as big. Also if you do get a Burmese etc then expect to need a large cage within two years. Which is one of the reasons they end up in Rescues

Yes, it *can* happen. But if you are responsible about it, this will not happen. We have to remember though, there are way more people killed by horses, and dogs every year than snakes. Keeping large snakes is not dangerous if it is done right. For instance, the girl in the story that was killed. Their Python escaped from it's cage, well, a secure cage is not a luxury. It's part of owning a reptile. And I will bet my next paycheck that there is a lot more to this story than what the news says. They make it sound like the girl was home alone, the snake broke out of it's cage and made a b-line for the child with the sole intent of killing her while she was minding her own business. I am positive that is not exactly the way it happened. She might have been holding the snake, and couldn't control it a snake that size can be very strong and if it is hanging on a "tree" that kept moving around it's natural instinct is to hold on tighter
