G'day Ya'll
every few weeks I see news stories on
intercepted shipments of reptiles often
headed for The States,from Aust.
Do any of you guys hear of dealers or
breeders offering or aquiring "wild stock from here??
Just curious.
(No I'm not a cop!!!.)

well, I refuse to go into any great detail, but I have a friend who runs a petstore about an hour away from me, and he has what he claims to be 2.4 thorny devils....I've seen them too..awesome animals.

They are amazing animals Captain!
No worries w/ no details I'm just curious to know
how many make it onto "the street" there & how open people
are about it.
It's unfortunate but up to 80% of these animals supposedly
perish in transport & many don't survive more than a few weeks
at their destination.

Yeah, it's a pity....I guess in the ideal situation, the animals that did make it back here would be treated and conditioned, then bred, to provide more CB animals, and less illegal, sick ones...The thorny's are so cool...the "male" will eat ants and pin head crickets off of my hand...very curious lizards...

If the government here would wake up
change legislation allowing some people (like me )
to get breeding stocks up & allow exports to happen there
may not be this problem.
I've only seen one devil in the wild hard buggers to find,
great camoflauge!!

My 'final exam speech' for my college Public Speaking class was about the Australian birds that are killed as pests there, but smuggled to the states as pets. My topic was about the trapping (humanely) of these 'pest' birds that are so popular and valuable here and quarantining/shipping to the states as breeders/pets. I was trying to use the horrible conditions of smuggling (smugglers get creative about hiding animlas) and the benefits of quarantine due to diseases/parasites carried by these birds, including zoonotic diseases (affecting humans). The same arguement could be used for reptiles or mammals as well. If the governments would just open their eyes, they would see a potential profit for the countries along with safety of all the living things involved. *sigh* Maybe we here at RTB should just unite and take over the world. Unfortunately the culling of these 'pest' birds still
goes on (this is not carried out humanely either)
but we don't hear about the smuggling of these animals so much
now ,mainly herps these days.(Not to say it does'nt happen)
Being a herper you don't hear "Joe bloggs got a couple of such'n'such in
from Oz" Just-me????
P.S. thought of that name change yet????

That's right Rager various cockatoos ,galahs
also mammals like kangaroo & flyingfoxes(fruit bats).!!!
They are all culled in numbers to supposedly save crops/pastureland.

Well I'm guessing by the lack of response here that
herp smuggling is not that prevelant, or is it heard
of but people don't want to talk about it/admit to it???

I'm very interested in this topic, but as it stands right now i have limited info. I am adamantly opposed to smuggling of any animals into the states. Not only that but, i am quite critical of imports of all kinds. I'm also critical of exports from the states to other countries. But as i had said previously, i have little info in regards to smuggled indo-australian fauna into North America.
ENtropy,
Alex

Don't they realize that allowing professional breeders to take breeding stock back to the US and create a large(er) captive bred population would put a LOT less demand on the wild caught ones, thus lowering the amount of animals poached. (poached in this case as caught wild).
