hi all.
i have a question for anyone that can help.
its in reguards to counting. i know how to count saddles n stuff, but i see discrepencies in the VENTRAL SCALE COUNTS!
listed for bci- less than 253
i dont reach these numbers- my animals are 100% from where they are from- so its gotta be me counting wrong.
with the venter count- i count from the head to the vent, vent to tip of the tail, and the whole thing! head to tip of the tail.
where am i supposed to count to??? do they stop at just the vent, and forget about the rest of the body or what???
listed in the boa constrictor manual are the MID BODY SCALE COUNTS- what the heck is that??? do they mean the ventral at mid body??? if so- i again do not come close to what is listed.
thats about all for now.
any help with this is much appreciated.
if interested i have my counts on all my snakes, but none are close to what was listed.
thanks
will

I'm speaking of pythons here but I'm
sure they're similar .ventral scales are from the first
single under body scale under the chin to the vent(not to tip of tail).
Mid-body are at the widest section of your snake starting from first scale
next to the ventral diagonally around to meet other ventral.
Try using a thin marker pen on a shed mark each scale as it is counted
& maybe swap colours every ten scales.

hi ben.
i know that. i have all my counts from every animal i have in my house.
with boas the venter scale count starts from where the neck would start on the boas. i use a measuring tape and get the exact mid body length and that scale count
if you read the boa manual, the mid body ROWS seems to be reffering to somthing else!
no way in #$%^$%^$%^$%^& are the mid body venter scale counts are gonna be in the 80's. my guys have higher than that!
they were way higher in my counts.
also the bci having less than 253 count is what i wanna figuer out too! do i stop counting at the cloaca??? if so, then it could work, but if i kept going i would be in the 300's
i wanted to know where to stop counting.
my counts do not coinside at all with the "book" s counts. the animals are 100% pure in locality too.

G'day CB.
As i said before I don't have access to a boa manual
but I would say when they ask for "mid-body scale count"
they're reffering to "rows".(Not ventral at mid-body).
With the ventrals you do stop at the anal scale after that they
are sub-caudals.
I hope I've got your Q. right this time.!!

You would'nt like it in Oz ,Lori!!
As a wildlife licence requirement we
have to provide a scale count of every
snake in possesion every 6 mnths!!!
