need to vent about my job search
As most of you know, I have been searching for a job for the past year, and not having much luck. A couple weeks ago, I had what was thought to be a very good interview with a local Toyota dealership for a lot technician or service porter position (people who drive the cars around).
Well, I called them back today, and Dave, the interviewer, informed me that my application had been declined due to "some underlying issues". So, I asked him what the problem was, as I thought the interview went well. He agreed that the interview went very well. He mentioned that his boss has a certain hang-up about my deafness, and how it would cause problems with communication during the training process, and while doing the actual job.
So, I told him that I would be able to figure out a way to work around that. I have had experience in previous jobs where I've had to work around it, and it always came out okay. Dave mentioned that he was quite impressed by the interview and was willing to talk things out. However, he couldn't promise anything as his boss has the final say in who gets hired, and who doesn't. My cousin is the one who hooked me up with the job. So, I suggested to Dave to have my cousin talk to Dave's boss, as my cousin knows me very well. Hopefully, he will be able to clear up a few things.
Things are extremely tight right now. So, I really need this job. This is far from the first time I have been turned down for a job on account of my deafness. I can do the work just as well as the next guy. Being deaf is not necessarily bad, but, it really is exhausting to have to go through life constantly fighting for everything, and always having to prove myself. Consider yourselves lucky that you don't have to deal with ignorants who get scared and don't give you a chance because your ears don't work.
I have the phone conversation saved, and I already have a few people telling me to sue the Toyota dealership since they are in violation of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). I agree that they are, but I'm not one to sue people at the drop of a hat. I prefer to try and work things out. I just don't agree with people being sue-happy these days for the smallest things.
I'm pretty #$%^$%^$%^$%^$%^$%^& right now, but at the same time, things aren't over yet. I should hear from them next week for a possible 2nd interview. My feeling is that the 2nd interview is for Dave's boss to meet me personally and go from there. Hopefully everything works out. Cross your fingers, eyes, toes, and whatever else you can keep crossed.
Bry

You're deaf? No wonder you enjoyed my singing so much on the camping trip...
But seriously...that sucks, and you are probably well within your rights to sue. I commend you for calling back, standing up for yourself, and not immediately running to a lawyer. Save the transcript though, by all means.
Hang in there, buddy. We're all right behind you.
Oh, and check your PM.

Wow, the are very much in the wrong on this one. They are very lucky that you aren't like many others who would have taken that and ran with it to a lawyer. Everyone (including yourself ) should be very proud at how far you have come in the work force and life for that matter.... when so many would have given up long ago.
I wish you the best and am very sorry to find out that so many people are just so ignorant and blind to what really makes up a good person and employee.
Hang in there!

I guess the boss is missing out in the great opportunity of having a truly deaf salesman for potential profits made from customers requests for a deal, falling on deaf ears.
Good luck man.. there's always a lawyer out there willing to take cases like this for no money down. Besides, if it does come to that point, you could own your own car lot.

People are so ignorant. I cant stand to see someone discriminate against someone like that. Keep strong Bry. Go there and insist they at least give ya a chance so they can see what you can do. If they dont then they are in the wrong and you should check into a lawsuite. People like that wont change unless someone stands up to them.

I know what it's like Bry. That is discrimination in my terms. Good luck and if you must, sue them.
