WOO! (help me!?)
I just learned that I will be doing regular snake shows with Bloomington's park and recreation program!
They came into my environmental science class and we began chatting and it went from doing one show that involved bats and local animals... to this... I'm so siked that I can do something that can portray snakes in a better light. I have done this before but not nearly on the scale they want.
Now my problem is...I don't think my snakes would be enough! I would love it if any one near southern Indiana would like to partake in educating the public. OR, any advice? Other times I have done this it was with the Hoosier Herp Society (i.e. I brought my snakes there, talked one-on-one) but this is the first time doing it on my own and I wouldn't want to dissapoint. (hopefully they will want to do much more in the future)
If anyone is interested I will post pictures of the events.
Wish me luck!!!

Re: WOO! (help me!?)
BTW I'm going to rip apart the house in search of a few serpents that are MIA.
So I won't be here until later tonight probably. If anyone is interested in joining me just PM me!

I would suggest posting on the KHS forum. There are several members that are in Indiana... KY Herp Society

Re: WOO! (help me!?)
That's AWESOME! If I was closer I'd sure join ya...snake shows are FUN! Besides live snakes, I find people enjoy seeing their sheds too! (and fangs/rattles?) I have also done handouts on relevant info (against rattlesnake round-ups, for pet snakes: why buy captive-bred, even copied my Far Side cartoon collection related to snakes...keep it fun/humorous, it reduces fears!)
"If anyone is interested..."??? OF COURSE WE'RE INTERESTED!!! lol...

I would suggest NOT mentioning this part if you want to encourage the general public to trust snake owners LOL
As to the shows, take lots of pictures, we'd love to see!!

Re: WOO! (help me!?)
Well I thought I posted on this thread but apparently it didn't work.
Considering certain coincidences we were believing that the two snakes that were missing were stolen, but luckily they were found. We've been remodeling my room and its been so choatic recently that I guess they got out...(Like, really choatic)
Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'm definitely bringing some sheds and I'll be sure to talk about general care and where to get them if anyone is interested.
What are your guy's thoughts about bringing wild-caught specimens to the shows? Obviously I wouldn't let any one hold them and they will be released after the show. The rules in Indiana are:
-no endangered species
-can't be kept longer than 30 days if you want to release them
-don't keep them with other animals
-must be release in the same spot they were captured
Hopefully won't keep them for more than a week, I do feel bad because it's stressful to the animal but then again the original idea was to have only native snakes so the next time someone sees a milksnake they don't think it's a copperhead.
This won't be a issue until next year but I would like to ask for your opinions.
My first show is the 29th! wooo!

Re: WOO! (help me!?)
All I can say is; Why Risk the health of every snake in a show, just to show off a wild caught one!!

My thoughts exactly! But the people in charge are very adamant about having native species and I'm trying to think of reasons why I should go through with it.
I guess if one show was just native species?
Any positives for getting them?

You might see if anyone has natives you can borrow for the display...I really hate the idea of catching snakes for such shows...very stressful & they could be exposed to stuff even if you are careful.
Education is important...but that's a high price IMO...
