New Computer wanted, needing suggestions

Hi guys, I am planning to buy a new computer cause I have a real old relic, I can't even install McAfee and have more junk than I can handle. I am getting ready to open an online book store through Ebay, am working on a book and just do general day to day stuff but have to admit I am short on patience. Any suggestions for an awesome upgrade that might make a techno junkie jealous would be really appreciated. Thanks as always.

I would go with an AMD system over Intel.
Also get Windows office, I think you get word, spreadsheet, and one more.
Also get at least 120 GB hard drive, plenty of space to store new books you're writting.

America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. – John Quincy Adams (1821)

Re: New Computer wanted, needing suggestions

My boyfriend has a degree in computer networking; he can build a computer from scratch. He helped me pick out the laptop I have (or rather, picked it out for me). He could tell you exactly what to get, where to get it, and how much it will cost.... I cant XD
I definitely don't know the kinda crazy stuff he does, but I can try to help still.
I am pretty partial to HP computers, myself.
It kinda depends what you want to use it for. If its just surfing the web and using office, etc, you're not going to need something super fancy. For games and such, the more RAM the better.
DO NOT GET VISTA.
Most any new PC should come with Windows 7, which is exponentially better than Vista. Vista is crap, crap, crap. I dealt with it on my old laptop. CRAP.
Most standard computers come with 100GB+ of hard drive (heck, my laptop has 320GB) so unless you plan on storing TONS of music and videos, you should be alright.

Yeah, I'm not too techno-geeky, but that's my input for ya :P

Re: New Computer wanted, needing suggestions

Do what I did, get a Mac. The iMacs are really nice. My wife got her iMac over 2 years ago. The machine runs exactly like it did on day one. I converted to a Mac earlier this year and have been very please. When my computer goes to sleep mode all I do is hit a button on the keyboard and in seconds I am working. My last pc was slow on startup, and it would take a few minutes to wake up from sleep mode.

Seriously if you can afford a mac then get one. If not, build out a pc on your own

Re: New Computer wanted, needing suggestions

I'd have to disagree with some of the people's suggestions. AMD or Intel will work just fine for what you're looking to do. 120gb will fill up incredibly fast, i'd recommend more is better. You can buy an external 1TB hard-drive for $79.00 so anything like that can also be bought afterward, but I wouldn't get something that small, it fills up very fast especially if you like to download music, videos, etc.

If you're looking for a desktop your best bet would be to have a friend that knows what they're doing and build you one. It really isn't that hard to do and you won't be getting crappy parts that will just break on you a year or 2 down the road (DELL). The only thing with building your own/having somebody build you one is if you run into a problem, you have nobody to turn to except people online (if you have a second computer) to walk you through how to diagnose and repair it yourself. Learning this does help out if you're interested in technology though!

If you're looking at something to take around with you, then I'd highly suggest HP for a laptop. They're incredibly good and well priced and offer good support if you ever run into trouble.

I'd stay away from Sony as all you're paying for is the name pretty much. I've never dealt with any of their computers, but they're pretty expensive for not offering that much to the user. They're pretty small as well, so I guess that's what you're ultimately paying for.

If you wan't a "small" laptop that's affordable you can look at Acer, they make some quality laptops and are more into the "gaming" area, so anything reasonably priced should handle web browsing + writing just fine.

Not sure on your budget or anything like that but anything around something like this would get you by fine for a couple years at least, if not more, depending on if you're into gaming or whatever (if you are, go with a desktop):

HP - Laptop / Intel® Core™ i3 Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory / 250GB Hard Drive - Biscotti - G62-234DX

The only brand I'd recommend staying away from is Toshiba, I've had nothing but problems with friends with with them.

If you really only want to browse the internet, download music, videos, etc, and write in office, then something simple like this would probably be just as good:

Acer - Aspire Laptop with AMD Athlon™ Single-Core Processor - AS5532-5535

You really don't need a Mac unless you really want to play around with one. They really aren't anything special if all you're doing is browsing the web and writing. If you're into video editing and art on the computer, then I'd suggest getting one, but for the money you're better off getting anything besides DELL.

Desktop:

Desktop vs Laptop is all personal preference on how mobile you want it to be, and how much space you want it to take up. Laptop takes up a lot less space, but you will pay more for the same features of the desktop. Meaning, if you already have a dedicated desk for a computer desktop set up, you might want to go that route, unless you like sitting on the couch and browsing. You can get one of those cheap fold up tables and get a portable mouse and pretend like it's a desktop as long as it's plugged in.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
