I'm going to college fall of 2004.... and i have not a clue as to what I'm going to do about my snakes... the only instate college that offers zoology as a major is 5 hours away... too far away to commute regularly enough to take care of my snakes myself... and the nature of my snakes (some of them need finesse when being handled) and the quanitity would make it difficult for my family to care for them while im away... im completely for getting rid of some of my snakes just to make things easier but even then i have to keep most of my boas... im just tooooo attached to the ones i've had for years and years...
the college i'd like to go to like most colleges requires freshman to be on campus... if i could by some magical means rent an apartment that allows herps... and by some equally magical means beg and plead to the dean to let me live off campus...
which i doubt he'll do... because that's usually left to people with dependents, married folks, and older (+21), but snakes? Sounds too silly to be reasonable...
I'll write to him if and when i get accepted...into the school... but is it a feasible thought?
Anything else I can do....?
My family has said that they could care for one or two and that i could find a friend or someone on here to keep the rest for me... but for such a long time? and such a large amount of snakes---they would have to be spread across a number of different people? That would be such a burden to everyone... and i don't want anything to imped upon anyone especially my family which has put up with me for so long...
The thought of selling off my fav snakes, makes me ill.... They have been my one "thing" for so long... what in the world would i do with myself without them?
*grumble*

Best thing I can say is get admitted, then go about figuring a way to get off campus housing.
If you are getting admitted into a special program ie: vet/medical and not into the liberal arts or general studies program then talk to the dean of that part of the school and get a recommendation from him for off campus housing for special circumstances. If you are going to WVU then it's pretty cheap to get off campus housing if you go a few miles out of Morgantown. I and several other people had the dorms our first year but also rented off campus housing for parties and ended up staying at the off campus stuff more than the dorms. Well Veg...I think that Stormy may have the best advice around. Although it's an extra expense, they can't make you stay in the dorm room, they can only make you pay for it. If your willing to pay for an off-campus place to stay, they really can't do anything about it.
On the other hand, if you need people to watch them for the first year, until you can get off campus, then you may be able to find some. If your willing to let a person (should I put me here?) who keeps them breed them and keep the litters, you may have a very easy time of finding someone to help you out with a lot of your snakes. How many do you have and do you have cages for them?
I know you would be out the litters, but if they would be willing to do that and let you have the snakes back, your not out in the long run.
Just a thought.

This is exactly why I am bald. Pulling my hair out because people put together huge collections of pets that only they in their families can care for BEFORE they are done with school, millitary or whatever and then when reality finally becomes more than a fleeting thought, BAM uhh What am I gonna do with all these snakes? Sorry if I seem to be using you for an example but this is such a classic case and example is such a fitting word....anyway...hope ya get it all sorted out. Maybe if nothing else, this may open some other eyes and make some people think before they purchase.

I have right now exactly.... 7. 4 colombian boas, 0.0.3 vine snakes of various species, 1.3 corn snakes, an ammy, and a brown anole...
I have caging obviously but not long term caging for some of the younger boas...

up until recently i had opted to go locally or just not go (no need for the college lecture, heard it 8,000 times, still think college isn't the only way to go, especially for a free lance writer)...
but to go locally would give me a degree i don't want (biology)...
if it comes down to it... i'd probably go for local... if i can't get things to work out at Marshall...

Not a problem... but when i bought my first boa i had already dug the hole too deep in my opinion... i was 12 at the time... so I was also perfectly clueless...

This particular delimma is one of about 12, 843 delimmas associated with my existence... I work through most of them.... we'll see about this... i have a year to figure something out... so it's not like there's a super immediate problem...
we'll see
we'll see.....

Thanks for all your imput guys!

Been mulling things over with my mother over the past few days... and she's agreed to take on a snake apprenticeship of sorts, which im glad for... if i can't work out an extra apartment then she's decided that i can keep the lot with her as long as i drive home every weekend to feed... which is fine by me... part of the deal is that i also have to shave some of the snakes that aren't really part of projects or aren't paired up yet... fine by me as well... this might actually me good for my mother... she's getting uh... restless with her job... and wants to put more effort into horse breeding and boarding (which as of now she does lightly) so im thinking maybe i can get her into snakes as well... she likes them mind you, she just isn't revioted by things like swells and waxy stools like i am...lol...
the future's not set though.... i may have a change of heart and become an ophiophobe and sell all my snakes because I think they're icky... not likely though lol...
