I've done near about a billion searches through google and on all the state websites... and for native herps... im fairly certain you need a permit to sell... which means if i ever want to sell corns i need a permit... i first called me local DNR...left a few messages... got no calls back... so i went there in person... they all seemed confused by the thought of me even owning a snake... and had no clue what the laws even were...
So they gave me this number of this guy down in the state DNR who would supposedly know... i called him many times left a few messages... got no reply... waited a week called again... left another message... then gave up... the raid on the Columbus Ohio Show... just reminded me of all of that...
so back to my question.... who do i have to get a hold of? i've also contacted the person in charge of non-game animals in the state DNR she wasn't sure and told me to ask locally... and we know how that turned out... i might just need to go knock on the door at the governor's mansion and ask him... like he would know! lol
and i may be moving to virginia within a few years and was curious of their laws on exotic and native herps.....
any help at all would be great...

I think the Author is John P. Lovell

VDGIF is a good start but I believe that the laws and restrictions also verry city to city
maybe try to dig in to the city and county codes careful though you migh tfind that it is illegal to chew gum and walk at the same time

I'd check your city, not state. Personally, I know that in Portage (where I live), you need a permit (GETTING that permit a an entirely different story. Still don't have one), but in Kalamazoo (just north, the only way you know you're in a different city is by the sign) all snakes are banned.
I called Portage Animal Control to get my info.

Well, I don't live in a city to begin with.... it's more a place with a name than anything else... and in this county animal control is dog only... and completley so... the county laws provide for that much.... maybe i could call animal control and they would maybe possibily have a cold day in heck's chance of knowing.... *sigh* we'll see.....

Importation Permit is required for native snakes. According to our
Importation Permit system, a veterinarian must certify that any snakes to be
imported to the state are disease free. An Importation Permit will not be
issued for any snake that may cause harm to a human (mainly venomous
snakes.) No Importation Permits are required for other non-native, exotic

M'kay.... You need an Importation permit, to keep animals that are native. If they are native...how can they be Imported? I would think Importation would mean to bring in from another country. Not saying its wrong, just think it's amusing in their terminology..

Then why the permit then?

Terminology is a little funky... he he
I know there is absolutely no catching of wild snakes.. so you would have to buy it from an out of state dealer...
i know for a fact that the native snake bit isn't enforced... corn snakes being the main one that's sold... but other ones aren't really seen much...
odd laws... i think corns sholdn't be considered as a native... corns have been seen only 3 or so occasions in west virginia and all times, many many years ago...
no herp surveys have been done here ever so that might account for it... but who knows..
