Red Ring of DEATH on XBOX
Ok so my son has had it for 2 years. And last week the ring popped up. # red flashing lights around the on switch. The top right light is not lit. I got on the Microsoft website and they told me that it was OUT OF WARRANTY!
So i searched the issue. And instead of paying $150 plus shipping to have it fixed by microsoft. Being the cheapskate that i am, i found how to "fix" the red ring of death.
So i proceeded to "fix" it. Well, needless to say it did NOT "fix" it.
Has anyone experienced this red ring of death?
Have you tried to "fix" it youeself?
What else can be done?

Re: Red Ring of DEATH on XBOX
bull... We have had it for 2 years and they are replacing ours... The same thing happened to ours... And you can also go on Ebay and buy a new hard drive for a decent price That's what the RRoD means

Re: Red Ring of DEATH on XBOX
Happened to me on my first one. But I got my use out of it (4 years I think).
.
Anywho, I called MS and told them what was going on and they sent me a box to mail it back (they don't do that anymore though, you have to box it yourself).
.
The 3 rings of death should be covered. I cannot recall if mine was 3 red lights with the top left out or the right. It's been awhile. They should fix it though. Give them a call and tell them what's going on.

Re: Red Ring of DEATH on XBOX
MS fixed mine without a problem, and it was about 2 years after I had gotten it. I hadn't purchased the extended warranty, but they still took care of it for me.

RROD are covered for 3 years under warranty. Between my son and I we've had 4 RROD. Great console but terrible hardware.

Yes, because turning 360 degrees would put you back facing the x-box

Re: Red Ring of DEATH on XBOX
i got the 360 when it first came out... never got 3 rings of death but i got several other problems... weird problems like a white screen coming up saying "put in compatible disc" in 13 languages... after replacing the original 360 five times, i gave up on it... i also got the ps3 when it came out... got a new 360 elite about a year and a half ago so that makes 6 xbox 360s for my one ps3 which is still the same as when i got it. the ps3 came out a year or 2 after the 360 so really my ps3 has outlived 4 360s.... whoever says xlive is better probably doesnt know any better... ps3 plays on dedicated servers and probably lags the same amount as the 360 on live which for me is close to none... 360 makes great, must have games (gears of war mostly, not a halo fan) but for hardware ps3 is a much better machine... plus ps3 has MAG and god of war 3 =D
from what i heard there is no way to fix the rings of death... and the 3 year extended warranty only covers certain failures, not all of them.
if youre into gaming the best way to go is to get both, and a wii on the side... if you can do with just one id say the ps3 is a better buy... you get more bang for your buck with a blueray player and bluetooth technology...

Re: Red Ring of DEATH on XBOX
Chad, dude, this is easy: you first want to warm up your pimpslap hand (which ever one you're more comfy with) with some light calisthenics and maybe a warm up game of extreme thum-wrestling. After this, place the pimpslap hand on a warm water bottle in an effort to keep things loose and flexible. If need be, you may meditate by thinking about how you want to hurt this contraption's feelings by calling it's mother things like "toolbox", and "flarfegllibllebutter". Shortly before physically assaulting said contraption, do some stretches of the obliques and abs for extra umph on the pimpslap follow through. Nothing sends the point home like a good follow through, after all, and no one likes a pulled oblique after pimpslapping an electronic piece of equipment. Be sure you haven't eaten within 45 minutes of delivering pimpslap, also be sure to go the bathroom before hand: look, NO ONE likes it when a little pee leaks out in a fit of annihilatory electro-equipment-fail rage. Ok, all set?
...... now send that thing to Vegas without a ride.
Afterwards, you may need someone to talk to about your experience, in which case the yellow pages will provide you with a good number of thrapists and certified professionals, trained in the field of ridonculosity and fits of uncontrollable electronics-assaults.
I wish you well, and good luck! Remember- it's all in the follow through, as well as the follow up.

Re: Red Ring of DEATH on XBOX
Call back. Explain nicely the problem, when they won't fix it, tell them that the cost of fixing it is pretty much the cost of a Wii (bluffing but whatevs) so why would you spend the money repairing a machine with customer service that's unwilling to help you, with no guarantee that it won't happen again and you'll have to go through the same thing? Tell them something along the lines of "You're just doing your job, I know it's not your fault, but I'm definitely going to avoid this company in the future." If they don't bend, ask kindly to speak to a supervisor. The whole time be SUPER crazy over-the-top nice.
I've gotten a lot of places to bend on warranties and things like that this way. It's not a guaranteed win, but it's worked more times than it's failed for me.
They ABSOLUTELY have the ability to fix your 360 for free. You just have to talk them into it.

Re: Red Ring of DEATH on XBOX
ok so the RROD is in reference to all four lights being lit up, creating a full ring. If that is the case then Microsoft should fix it for free. but if its just 3 of them then they wont.
also, if you opened the case then the warranty may be void as well.
The newer xbox's have been better, you may just want to replace it. I bought a refurbished one over 2 years ago and have never had a problem. I also know that the Elite systems are less prone statistically to failure.
*side note: keep it cool. The xbox being in an enclosed case will cause problems like this. make sure it has plenty of ventilation, and wont be overheating. I recommend not placing it inside of an "Entertainment Center".
