Well, the Banded Geckos are great, without a doubt, but wait until you get a load of the Chuckwallas, Collard Lizards, and one of my favorites the Leopard Lizards. My favorite snakes around the Las Vegas area were of course the rattlers, and most commonly I would see Sidewinders, Speckled and Mojave Rattlesnakes. Field herping is going to take on a whole new meaning!!! Keep in mind that if you are moving someplace like the Phoenix area its a big, sprawling city and depending on where exactly you end up may involve a little drive to the best "hot spots"! It's gonna be a bit of a culture shock for a kid from west PA..but you're gonna love it!

Yeah I love it out there. I go every summer to visit my aunt and uncle. And no worries about driving. Where we are moving its 1 hr from Pheonix and right in the desert....LITERALLY. I Cant wait. How common are the kings, milks, and gophers??

I drove from SC to Maine in the winter. That was with 5 glass tanks and 5 snakes. I put all 5 snakes in pillow cases and tied it tight. Those road up front with me behind the seat in the uhaul. I only had one tank get a crack in it. Just pack carefully and drive carefully. GL.

I always found Gopher Snakes to be the most abundant, the Kings a little less so, at least in the areas I used to haunt. Depends on if there's a perennial water source nearby (i.e., natural body of water, stream, man-made irrigation canal, etc.) then there's a better chance they'll be in some numbers, but not always a guarantee. Arroyo's (dry washes, small canyons) and rocky outcrops are where you're going to have your greatest success. If the day temps. are over 90 - 95 degrees F your snake hunting will be at night (though I've seen plenty of rattlesnakes mid-day during some pretty warm days!). The lizards like it hot, so you'll see them during the day. The flip side of that is that the Banded Geckos I've only seen at night. So it just depends on the species and their habits, temp. requirements, etc. Join the local Herp. Society...I would imagine they'd have field trips every now and then, plus all the old crusty desert rats that know when and where to look for what!
