Unfortunately, I'm going through the same thing. I'm glad you've gotten yourself turned around, BW.

Re: Fighting Burnout
Glad you're getting thru this BW...I used to keep a ridiculous number of snakes for alot of years (and rescued rattlesnakes too)...like you, I was getting burned out, but thinned my collection down (and moved cross country)...it has grown some this last year but nowhere near what I was dealing with before, plus I have more time these days anyway. (I keep a total of 23 snakes, no venomous anymore, and several snakes are quite old.) I know of some who literally got rid of everything due to burnout...so it sounds as if you're gonna be ok...hope your hand improves!

Re: Fighting Burnout
I went through some major burnout over the last year. I got up to 16 animals, and now am down to 9 snakes which is much more manageable for me. I think everyone goes through burnout ever once in a while. I still am sad about some of the snakes that I rehomed, but it has made it easier for me to enjoy what I have and not feel like snake husbandry and maintenance is such a chore. Personally I cringe when I see some people's collections growing like ragweeds and silently shake my head knowing that very likely when all those small little snakes grow up and everything is so intense and time and money start to be an issue, than burnout is more likely. Just some thoughts, not intended to point anyone out.
Finding the right balance between family, work, friends, for some school, and our hobbies is a balancing act that we all constantly go through. Best of luck BW and hope your hand continues to improve.

Re: Fighting Burnout
I too understand the burnout and can relate to it very well. I too just like you have hit rock bottom on snakes and other reptiles for a while. I still enjoy seeing them and telling people about them. But as far as keeping them I think I'll leave that to the younger generation for a while. As for me I have really enjoyed not having to clean enclosures.

I know I scared a lot of people when they first realized how large my collection was - but I hope that I've proven that they're with me for the long haul... that said, I do understand burnout. I guess mine was just directed at my lizards. I ended up giving away my beardies to good homes, and then my chameleons, and then lastly, my cresties... I was finding myself resenting them for needing "daily feeding" and insects, and all that jazz... it wasn't fair to them, and it became too much for me. I am lucky enough to have a ton of good friends (and potential customers) wanting to help clean, and all that. I think that makes it fun, that people WANT to see my snakes. Although, there is something totally soothing about being one on one with my babies...
Man.. sorry if that was OT - I just started typing. Burnout is very real - it's what you do about it that makes the difference.

Re: Fighting Burnout
Katie, I know what you mean about the 'daily' ones...much as I like geckoes and beardies, I did not replace the ones I had (my geckoes passed on or were re-homed, and the beardie I rescued was rehomed after some 4 years); my 2 dogs are 'daily care' too, and on top of all the snakes, that's all I can deal with. (it's even harder when ya get old like me, lol!) I think it helps to know this happens to many if not most of us sooner or later, at least those of us with more than the casual pet!
