I was just curious if anyone has done this to their larger, or more expensive snakes. I work in a vet lab, and when dogs and cats go over seas they need to be microchiped. Can we do this safely to our snakes? I think it would be a good idea just incase I ever lose my snake (god forbid!) or maybe a landlord may think it's a "responsible" thing for a herp owner to do. Any thoughts???
Thanks!

I don't know if anyone -here- on RH has microchipped their snakes. However, yes, a few breeders have microchipped their large and expensive snakes, especially high-dollar ball morphs. A few breeders will also provide the option of microchipping snakes they sell.

~ $25-$40, depending on who does it.

Yep. Avid chips are commonly used on reptiles and amphibians. Some states, such as Ohio, make it illegal to posess native snakes which are not chipped.

Well, it is a good idea if you have some high end snakes..
BUT it isn't a miracle tracker device in case they get missing.
They have to be found first, then read with the tools for the job, if that even happens instead of going straight to the kennels for euth.
Where it will work is in a theft recovery type situation.

My aunt teaches large and small animal surgery at the University of Wisconsin - Madison Vet school and has chiped several large snakes. Many of them belong to one of the Herp vet proffs. One noteable is Del a 14 ft burm who he sleeps with.

Come on...I know Madison is a pretty liberal town (my wife's from there!) but sleeping with a 14' burm sounds hazardous to ones health!!! Next time I go there to visit the in-laws I'm gonna pay closer attention to who they're sleepin' with!!!
