Here is the news brief.
"40-year-old man is hospitalized with constipation, lower back pain, chills, and fever. Man is diagnosed with salmonella which he contracted from his 2 "pet" iguanas. Man has never handled reptiles, but had cleaned cage."

well, yeah you can catch salmonella from cleaning cages cuz you come in contact with their crap. Whether or not thats how he got it who knows. I dont see why it would cause problems in CT though when you can also catch it from uncooked chicken.

it can happen- especially with iguanas! but thats not their fault. its his. he prolly didnt wash up after his cleaning session.
i hope thats doesnt bring more bad crap toward us. it happens. especially with turtles!!
simple- when you clean them up, you clean you up. i know 100% that my snakes are healthy and disease free- but i still wash up after messing around with them.
i wash up after a day of work- i dont trust people either.

Connecticut is just about the WORST state in the US to live you want to keep any type of reptile.
All venemous species are illegal to keep.
All native species are illegal to keep.
All crocodilian species are illegal to keep.
Certain turtles and frogs are illegal to keep.
Some towns have certain zoning laws that have further restrictions. Some will not allow any types of monitors. My town will not allow any constrictors over 4 feet in length.
When I moved a few years ago, I was unanware of the zoning. I was reported when I was seen moving a 6 foot RTB into the new house. It was confiscated and I was fined.
When things like this show up in the news, it just causes more restrictions.

I wonder if they even asked the patiet if he had eaten chicken in the past 2 days of getting sick? If he is foolish enough to not wash his hands while handling poo (ewwww!) than he deserves to be sick (I know, I'm being harsh again, oh well). What kind of cutting board does he use for cutting meat at home, does he leave his eggs in the egg tray on the door of his fridge, has he gone to a public bathroom and not washed his hands. All of those scenerios and more can bring on a bout with salmonella. *sigh* Poor iguanas, what did the 'authorities' do with them?

I have to agree with the "Salmonella Goddess" on this one. Even if the man had not eaten any chicken there is no sure way to say that he got it from the iggys! It may be more than likely, but noone can say 100% unless they track the actual strain (if there are different types).
Chalk this up as another point for educating the ignorant.
