Let's take a moment....

...and reflect on all the excellent games that have been destroyed/mutated beyond all semblance of recognition lately. Yep, it's time for a trip down memory lane, folks. I'm not talking about the classics that started the gaming craze, but merely the original games that still today dominate over their mutated descendents.

-Warcraft: The PC game that had you scurrying around for resources and building an empire before crushing your opponent, much like Age of Empires. Was replaced with Starcraft and World of Warcraft, divorce rates skyrocketed.

-Grand Theft Auto: The amazing top-down PC game that led to so many current iterations that my head spins.

-The Need for Speed: circa the mid 90s this racing game was produced by Electronic Arts (back when it was CALLED that, not this "EA Sports" crap) and Road and Track magazine. Again, so many iterations of this game/genre have come to life it's insane, but NONE of them could touch the original.

-Duke Nukem: This game needs no introduction. It is, quite simply, one of the best FPS games of all time... I believe it was just remade under a different title.

-Mario Brothers: Remember the old sidescrolling SNES version? I remember being horrified when the 3D N64 version came out.....

-Quake: A classic, and excellent competition for the next on the list.

-Unreal: Simply amazing, and one of my all time favorite games. The newer version absolutely killed it for me, especially the move to consoles. The graphics engine lives on in other games, but the Unreal I remember and love died a long time ago.

There are others....

Re: Let's take a moment....

Agreed somewhat but I'd like to add my own:

Silent Hill

1 through 4 were AMAZING until the original japanese team broke up and the series fell into the hands of Americans (no offence).

The games were never the same. The 5th installment was absolutely horrible. Completely combat based, shooter, FINISH HIM moves... Ugh. The game isn't about kicking monsters arses...

My favourite game ruined and tortured with no hint of dying... ):

Re: Let's take a moment....

Looks too complex for me LOL. Ikariam can get tough once you figure out the basics and get into deep strategy, BiteFight is freaking simple.

Re: Let's take a moment....

Chrono Trigger is probably the best turn-based RPGs ever, released on SNES and later for the DS.
Who remembers Goldeneye for the 64?
Good party games are Mariokart & Smash Bros but my favorite game series are Resident Evil, Final Fantasy and Call of Duty (new RE5 blows it looks good but story sucks and way too easy also lookin forward to new FF and new Modern Warfare 2.

Re: Let's take a moment....

I miss the good ol' games. Though Duke Nukem 64 was great to play in vs mode with my brother. He'd get SO ticked off every time I'd book it for the shrink ray, let him have it and chase him around until I stomped him flat. Good times...

I've completely lost interest in video games these days. I've got friends hounding me to play World of Warcraft, but as it is I've got one addiction (reptiles) I do NOT need another one to take up all my time. :P

I am with you on this one. I hated that dog.

Re: Let's take a moment....

I had a hundred or so games for the C64. For sheer game play, I'd take the worst of them over some of the garbage that publishers release these days. Marble madness is one of my alltime favorites.

I have recently (finally) gotten an xbox 360 because Microsoft doesn't otherwise get quite enough of my money. I will admit that the graphics are stunning in 1080i, but some of the game play Blows.

A perfect example (feel free to snicker): Rapela Fishing.

I got the Rapela fishing game for Playstation2 not as long ago as I would like to admit. I loved it! The actual game mechanics were pretty unique to anything else I had played. Because I enjoyed that little game so much, I picked up Rapela Fishing Frenzy for xbox360. To state that I was disappointed would be a major understatement. Disappointed doesn't come close.

As an actual fisherman, I want to know why the game authors seemed to think that it was a good idea to interrupt fighting a bass in order to press an annoyingly complex series of buttons in order to get some sort of goofy powerup?

So to sum up: Game Writers, if you are out there, go back and take a second look at some of the classics. Figure out what made them great, and Do that again. Yeah.

The main reason I went P3 was b/c of the cost to play online. Granted, currently I dont play online, but should I ever get the itch, I sure as heck dont want to pay $$ to do so

I have my p3 hooked up to a 46" 1080p and its mind blowing. Compared to my old Nintendo. its a wonder how I ever figured the games of old were "uber cool looking"

LOL
