I personally loved my sega genesis, i still own it and like 30 games for it that still all work 
one of the genesis games, toe jam and earl has an awesome 2 player system that i think would be awesome for new games to go by but I havent seen any games implement it. What it is, is that when the 2 players are close enough to eachother you share the screen, but when you get so far apart the screen splits giving each player their own screen.
the original sonic games were awesome, its ruined now
EDIT: cool spot, based off the 7up red dot was a funny game also it was a side scrolling shooter
