*READ THIS* Virus Warning
Hey guys, I just got an email from the company that I ordered my PC from warning their customers of a malicious virus/worm that is spreading on the internet, that gathers your personal info among other bad things....
Just thought I'd pass this along. The links are both legit (they are on the microsoft website) and I have already downloaded and installed the updates etc. I'm clean, but I'm still backing up all of my files...
Quote:
Dear Vision Computers Customer,
By now you have probably read or heard through news agencies, online articles, and various other sources about the dangerous Conficker virus that maybe lurking on your system ready to become active, stealing your personal data and information and even damaging your system.
What you haven't been told is how to remove it from your system as well as preventing re-infection. We here at Vision Computers always put our customer’s system security and personal data first and have created a short write up to help you deal with this threat.
Following the steps below can help ensure that you are not affected by the known versions of this internet worm.
1. Go to the following link and check to see if you have all of the security updates installed: Microsoft Update Web Site
2. Go to the following Microsoft link and download the current Malicious Software Removal Tool: Microsoft Malicous Sotware Removal Tool Download
3. Run this program and when prompted select Full Scan. This will allow the tool to detect and remove the worm. It may take several hours to complete.
4. If you have anti virus software, run a complete scan of your computer.
5. Make a backup of all of your important data.

I heard about this at work today. Strange...I didn't realize how serious it was.

All I know is I don't take any risks. As a graphic/web designer, if my computer crashed and I lost everything then I'd be finished.

McAfee bites.
I use Trend Micro.
I used to use mcafee untill I had a virus slip in.
Trend micro has even caught many viruses before getting in.

Re: *READ THIS* Virus Warning
*eyes clock*
April first for officially an hour and 18 minutes, and nothing. I think the april fools gag wasn't the virus, but the threat of one that everyone bought. :\
I could be wrong about that. Just seems like every april fools day a new virus, wyrm, or whatever pops up and scares the baheebits out of everyone for days(sometimes a couple weeks) prior and all these patches and downloadables are available to "keep you safe". Thus far, I have yet to get a virus and I only have free virus software.
I don't know anyone who's gotten one of these viruses, either. :\
Better safe than sorry of course, I'm just ranting. It's late and I can't sleep. lol

Re: *READ THIS* Virus Warning
My actual opinion.
This piece of Malware is real. It is not as scary as the old school Michelangelo or some of the other killers from way back in the day. This is due largely to the fact that our good friends at Micro$oft have started to get a little more serious about security holes and fixing flaws with the OS and the browser. All OS's are harder to hack than they used to be.
This particular threat is going to hit people who haven't been paying attention. It basically can't hit anyone who has the latest security updates. If you already have the bug, the MS Malware removal tool will take care of it... but of course Yesterday was the time to do it.
A funny story happened to me literally just a few minutes ago. For those who don't know, I am a Systems Admin, Help Desk Analyst, and general IT Bottlewasher and fry cook for a medium-large company.
One of my end users followed me into my office this morning complaining of computer problems. He said that when he tries to type numbers in excel, not only does it not type any numbers, it will take him to a different cell entirely.
His question: "Do you think this has anything to do with the April 1st thing?"
I interjected "No!" some where right between the "Has" and the "Anything" in the above sentence.
I patiently followed him back to his desk and immediately noticed that his Num Lock was not turned on, thus solving his particular April 1st glitch.
I deeply suspect that I am going to get tired of hearing the word Conficker today.
The moral of all this is that this threat is no different than any other threat. The only major difference is this one was discovered very early and we were able to come up with a solution. The reason it has gotten so much hype is because this particular threat has a "D Day". The media eats that stuff up. That and bugs with cute names like the "I Love You" Virus from a few years ago.
