help choosing a new pet :)
ok so i acquired a new cage dimensions are 40 long by 16.5 deep by 25 high. im wondering what i can get to keep in this cage for almost all of a reptiles life. i dont want to put a snake in it, as i only want one snake as of now. and i dont want a gecko or beardie or savannah . im thinking about a tegu, but im not sure what kind. or even an ackie. but i dont know. what are your suggestions on what i can keep in this tank? will have adequate under heat and over heat and an option of a UV bulb. the cage is made out of an old dresser like real real old lol. and the only thing i need to replace is to put on new doors, im going to use sliding glass doors. any suggestions on what i should have? thanks alot! -Jon

Re: help choosing a new pet :)
WAY to small for a Tegu, maybe you could keep somethng the size of a Ackie in their but that is a very small cage. Geckos maybe?

Re: help choosing a new pet :)
i know its small for an adult tegu, but how long would a tegu baby be able to use this cage? then again tegus grow prett yquick so less than a year i bet. i have had geckos in the past and dont want to get anymore. i mis measured the height of the cage its 30 high by 40 long by 16.5 deep im thinking of adding to it and extending it to 18 deep.

Re: help choosing a new pet :)
Ahh.... you have a case of ECS... or empty cage syndrome. Be careful that can be dangerous!!!
I would suggest a Blue tongue Skink... They have tons of personality, good size, easy to feed, and TONS of personality... oh wait, I already said that.

All reptiles can be mean little buggers, but ackies do less damage than exanthematicus.

Re: help choosing a new pet :)
To be honest, when I saw the first post I thought that he was giving us the dimensions of his new cage in FEET. So, then I was thinking: Wow!!! This guy is serious....and he has LOTS of space!!! Then I was thinking: 2 Anacondas? Some Galapagos tortoises??? A Komodo Dragon? ..... Then I decided to ask him if I could move in there myself......
So it's inches. Well congrats on getting the cage first and then deciding what would be best kept in it, rather than the other way aound. Some people get the critter first and then try to find something to put it in.

Re: help choosing a new pet :)
I love my blueys!! I have 3 Northerns, but recently gave my niece my Irian Jaya for her 12th birthday. (her first reptile!!) Sorry, I'm proud.
A blue tongue skink can cost anywhere from $65 for a wild caught Irian Jaya to $650 for a Caramel Northern Blue tongue skink and even more($1000's) for the "difficult to find species" like Shinglebacks.
I do know of some breeders you can find them at the website in my sig.

Re: help choosing a new pet :)
im hoping i can afford a skink or an ackie at the next show, my goal is to go to the show and get a nice RTB. at the moment i dont know if i will have enough for what i want. i wanna get a nice guyana or a hypo. but im nto sure yet. the skinks are amazing looking my friend said he had one and he loved it. but ive been living off of unemployment since december (its so hard to find a good job that i can have around my school schedule) so ive been saving up money as much as possibly i have untill the 19th of april . hoping do save 50-75 bucks a week untill the show. i already have 80-100 so hopefully ill be bringing 300-350 to the show. i dont know only time will tell!

Should you be buying pets at this time? I don't know your full situation but if I was on unemployment, I wouldn't be buying any pets for fear that I wouldn't be able to give proper care.
Please don't take offense to this. Like I said, I don't know your financial situation. Just be sure you can provide for these animals. My animals come first, even before me.

oh i completely understand your POV. and fortunately for me, althought im living off of unemployment i also live with my parent untill i finish college. so i dont pay rent, i have car payment and cell phone bill. and some odds and ends here and there. and ill have a job by end of april hopefully but even if i dont i will most certainly be able to afford to care for any animals i plan on purchasing i have actually setup a plan to set aside 25-50 bucks a week just for my animals in a seperate bank account. 25-50 bucks will be enough for food weekly. expecially since i will be breeding my own crickets and buying by the 1000's. and also buying mice in bulk aswell ( have a biiiig freezer ) so i have taken all of this into account. and i am using my first check after i get the animals to take them to the vet. any suggestions will be taken as advice and not offensively

My suggestion would be to rescue something off of Craig's list. God knows, we hear enough horror stories from there.

actually i check that site religiously for reptiles that need to be rescued. in february someone posted an ad saying they needed to get rid of their BP it was 2 years old and in a 10 gallon tank he said if its not gone by this weekend, i think its too cold for it to survive outside. i emailed him but never got a reply
