Question Common species of reptiles that you don't see the appeal of/have bad luck with?

Out of curiosity; are there any common species of reptiles that everyone else seems to love but you don’t get the appeal of, or don't have good luck with?

For me; it is Corn snakes. I really like Corns, but I have awful luck with them. Of the three that I’ve had; two loathed me, and the one that did like me passed away from unknown causes. Ironically; my best friend owned the sister of the Corn snake that liked me, and both of them died at the exact same time on the exact same day for reasons that even our vets couldn’t figure out. I have been keeping snakes for fourteen years and do very well with any other species that I've had; but for whatever reason Corns are just a different story for me.

I will probably try my hands at them one more time, but if that doesn’t work out I am going to give up for good with Corns and just stick with boas, pythons, and some of the less popular species of colubrids.

Anyone else have similar experiences in that regard?

I've never had any bad luck keeping herps but there are those that I like more than others. I love water snakes but I don't keep them because I don't like their mess. I don't keep hots for obvious reasons but I would love to have a copperhead. I think they are beautiful.

Hmmm... for some reason, I've never really seen the appeal of turtles/tortoises... (sorry blacklava... ) I don't really know why. Don't get me wrong, they're adorable when they're babies, but I think they're sort of boring, or at least that's the only thing I can think of as to why I'm not as interested in them.

Haha.... or maybe it's because they have legs

haha, hey they arent for everyone they seem to be more fun when you have a pair or group of them, and with aquatic turtles, the more room they have to swim, the more active and interesting they are and its fun to watch them interact with each other but yea, when you only have like one in a little tank they arent too much fun

Oh, yeah, I like aquatic turtles (especially sea turtles when you are in the water with them)... haha

edit: and I like the kind of turtle in your other thread...

I'm going to have to go with Cali. king snakes. They are beautiful, but i've never met one that likes me. All but one of the bites i've recieved over the years have been from Cali. kings. I've never had one of my own though, so maybe one day i'll give them a try and hopefully it won't think i'm lunch like the others i've handled have.

im horrible with lizards... Ive had a leopard gecko and a had a WC sage brush, both died on me reasonably fast tho the WC sagebrush could have been from old age, i just stay away from them for now

Cool thread.

I dont really see the appeal of turtles unless like Lava said you had several with room to roam. I would like to get a few going in my Koi pond but dont know too much about them. Ive had several large rat snakes...1 grey and 2 yellow and they were all mean as heck...dont care for them now..LOL

Wow; thanks for the responses everyone! I am glad to hear I am not the only one who is 'challenged' with a certain species. It is also very interesting to hear from people who have different tastes in reptiles.

May I ask if there is any particular reason? I am more of a boa/python girl myself, but I am all curious.

Ouch, good luck with that! At the very least; I am glad to meet a fellow member of the popular-colubrid-that-everyone-loves-regularly-tries-to-eat-me club.

LOL, I can understand that. While I've met a couple of very sweet tempered rat snakes, they have been few and far between.

Just not attracted to them I guess. They're small and skinny and i don't like their faces, I don't like how aggressive kingsnakes can be (granted ANY snake can be aggressive).

Weird, I know... but personal preference I s'pose

I have met a few people who don't have good luck with Corn Snakes and due to their delicate nature I don't think I would ever own one myself.

I don't like king snakes because every one I've met wanted to eat my face.

I don't like blood pythons because, to me, they look like big slugs. Sorry yall, I know a lot of people love them.

I don't like rosy boas all that well either, but I love mine because I saved her life. I think she's a very homely snake. And she also wants to eat my face about 70% of the time.

Ill have to jump on the collubrids wagon here. I dont know, but Ive never been a fan of them. Also, BP's.. I know a lot of people love them, but I dont find them terribly interesting. They seem to be the "designer snake" now with all 500 of the different genetic morphs for them. I would kill for a tree snake someday
