Funny, we have one fisheries class and that's actually an choice: avian bio or fisheries. Well I didn't want to take fisheries and there was a class conflict with avian bio so I took an animal behavior class instead. My classes at UF are focused on managing large scale: habitats, landscapes, metapopulations, etc. It's a conservation driven major instead of how some others are more game and hunting management.

You can have a field biologist job and still have your animals! I intend to! I'll still have my small breeding business on the side and hopefully find job(s) with the state, water management districts, and others doing data collection near to where I live. I did a 6 month job an hour south of me. I got up when I wanted to, drove the hour down south, checked my herp traps, left at dark, and back in time to take care of animals or whatnot. So it is attainable, you'll just have to keep searching!

But I don't think they would be able to give all that they offer if it wasn't a state college that gets federal funds for research...
Where are you? it's said that they don't offer zoology! (marine bio I could understand if you don't live by an ocean...)

Re: College People with snakes
For all of you in college, most colleges offer a year-abroad program. I did this in my senior year. I lived and went to school in St. Andrews, Scotland and got to travel all over Europe. I even spent the summer on a Greek island. I did this all on student grants and loans and a shoestring budget. Of course I didn't have any animals then. But if you get the chance, it's a life-changing experience. I highly recommend it for the adventurous types.

I'm in the same position. I live on the other side of White Rock Lake. I followed my family down here, and they moved back to New York within a few years. I wound up staying, and met my wife, who coincidentally is also from New York.
Not much here though, except extremely affordable living.

Re: College People with snakes
I'm a college "kid" I guess you could say. I finished one engineering degree, and now I'm going back for another.
My family drives me nuts and my job is crazy at times.
I don't relax. Ever. I find that impossible.

Yes, I'm leaving for a study abroad program in Namibia Africa in 14 days (holy crap 14 days!! )!! I'll get to do my own research project on small mammals and their lice, plus help with taking care of the research station's 100 or so cheetahs. Also we'll get to go herping, birding, and mammaling and watch water holes for wildlife. It's kinda otherwordly and it hasn't fully hit me yet that I'll be over there for 3 whole months and another 2 weeks with some friends cruising around South Africa.

There was a Harvard graduate who did something like that. She did some sort of a work-vacation in South Africa on a wildlife refuge. She became so engrossed in the plight of the wildcats there, she moved out there and started the largest wildcat sanctuary in South Africa. You can do work-retreats out there as well, though it's pretty expensive (you pay for the privilege of working there). I would love to do something like that, if only I didn't have my little anchors around my neck.....I mean.....my babies.

Re: College People with snakes
dallas aint bad, this place has a whole TON more opportunities and stuff to do than my hometown, but it doesnt offer what i really wanna do i think san antonio would be a bit better school-wise, or maybe austin. i have to do more research on their schools before we move though even tyler tx has some sort of zoology program :/ but its tough finding jobs in that small place LOL

Re: College People with snakes
Star - that sounds like what the lady at the station I'll be working at did. She was the one who figured out how to get cheetahs to breed in the US zoos. She worked at the National Zoo in the 80s, then packed up and moved to Namibia to start a cheetah conservation program. Now she's got the largest cheetah conservation program in all of Africa, the Cheetah Conservation Fund ( Cheetah Conservation Fund).
Blacklava - it's hard to get wildlife jobs period, doesn't matter where you're applying. The key is to do internships!! Or find summer (or work study) jobs with USGS, state agencies, local universities, etc.
