Re: College People with snakes

I love the hands on stuff too! That's my biggest complaint with my classes in my major, not enough labs to get out and touch and do some of the practices they teach us about.

To me $48-50k/yr is a boat load! I've been lucky to get $20k/yr sometimes, but that's only 20-30 hours a week. I have a number of zoo keeper friends, some have to work 2 jobs just to make ends meet. One married really well so he's fine working in a zoo while his wife works as an OT in the hospital system.

Insects have been one of my big passions all my life. I had an aquatic entomology course in Fall '07 and then I had Intro to Ento this past fall. I REALLY loved those classes, especially because they were so hands-on and the taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, etc came so easy to me.

Ditto. That's one of my biggest complaints. My other one is that the programs in my major (well, my major in general) are so focused on fisheries. I know more about fish than I do big game or other wildlife and I STILL have some fish classes left to take. I mean fish are cool and all, I like fish, but not THAT much. It's too much fish!

Knowledge of Accounting and a good opportunity. I was able to get an internship at an accounting firm, and from there it progressed into a nice job. I was lucky to have a coworker that helped me learn and continues to guide me through the more complex issues that accountants face. Soon I will have to stop working there since Law School will be taking up most of my time.

Good Luck.

Re: College People with snakes

I'm 20, and I work full-time. I was going to a tech school for graphic design right after I graduated, but couldn't stand the school. So I dropped out after 6 months (and about $9,000 later..), and now just work to pay back the loans. Once I'm halfway done paying them back, I'm going to a REAL school for Bio Edu. I would really enjoy a field job, but I don't think I could leave my collection for more than a week. They're my kids!!

Ya sometimes school sucks but I need it and like what I do there so I'm gonna stick. Love my herps and someday hope to make enough money to get a "real" breeding collection goin.

Re: College People with snakes

I'm 18, stillin high school, graduating this June, I have 3 corns, 2 boas, 1 childrens python, 1king, 1carpet python, 1 western hog, 1 leopard gecko, pacman frog, pixie frog, couple different roaches, 9 Arizona bark scorps, and a dog, actually had more, but got rid of a few things. Gonna go to college for zoology, or ecology/ evolutionary bio. Been my passion forever, most dorms don't allow anything but a 10 gal fish tank( with fish in it, go figure!) I don't know what I'm gonna do about my animals!

Me too! That would be one of my dream jobs. And I might do it... I just have to decide. I'm currently majoring in biology with both marine biology and pre-veterinary medicine options... so I have a big decision I'm going to have to make soon since I'm a junior. And I am so torn! But If I do go the pre-vet way, I'm thinking of specializing in exotics (esp. herps) because there seem to be so few good herp vets out there from what I read on the forums... haha

And as far as the whole having snakes and going to school thing? I love it! It's so fun to come home and chill with your snakes, or to get one out to put around your neck while you do homework

I'm twenty getting my AA and being certified in histotechnology (completed in a year). I have 5 snakes one lizard and two dogs. When I'm done with this school I'll be going to the university of washington to get my masters in biology most likely then off to med school to become a pathologist! Oh I go to school full time and work full time.(FYI the histology class is six hours long and I have classes on top of that to)

I'm going to Oregon State University. It's a pretty good school in the science/engineering fields, but not really anything else... haha. But yeah, they have a pretty cool marine bio program where you get to spend a term out at their research center on the Oregon coast. But I don't think they would be able to give all that they offer if it wasn't a state college that gets federal funds for research...

Where are you? it's said that they don't offer zoology! (marine bio I could understand if you don't live by an ocean...)
