Ya but that may be a place to start. If not to work to look for other options and resources. Not sayin stay there but it could generate other contacts. I went to the zoo up here and did one of their herp classes and it was cool. I learned a bunch of stuff I didn't know and thought I did. The zoos are kinda like a portal for other places. I would rather be outside than in also.

Re: College People with snakes
I'm a non-traditional, full-time student. For that reason I have decided to keep my collection to a minimum of 3 snakes right now. I considered selling off my animals, but then decided to do all that I could to keep the ones I have. So, no new acquisitions for me for another 4 years or so.

Re: College People with snakes
I'm 32, with a newborn, a wife, a fulltime job, a consulting business on the side, six dogs, two cats, a bunch of snakes and lizards, and a half-finished accounting degree.
There's no such thing as adequate time, it's a myth.

Ya for the most part I agree. But most of the time I look like a running chicken cause of all the stuff to do. Relaxation time is really hard to find. Look at my list of aminals and you'll see my day almost never ends til late and that's just the start. So I know what it's like too.

Re: College People with snakes
I'm 23 and a full-time student with somewhere along the lines of 20 snakes, 15 or so turtles, a parrot, a few lizards, a breeding rack of rats, etc... and I still manage just fine. It's pretty good actually, considering I'm only living off of a few hundred bucks a month of allowance since I don't have a job. Though I'll be curator of my University's Entomology museum starting in the spring.
As long as I keep up with school work and studying as soon as I get home and get it all done for the day, then I have the rest of the time to deal with my critters and relax... so I don't get stressed out often.

Well that's lots of critters and congrats cause there are lots left to do at the end of my day. Sometimes I can't find the time so I just fall into bed.

Re: College People with snakes
I am a Junior in College studying to become an attorney. After this semester I could go into criminology because of all the extra criminal justice classes I have taking, but I have to look at what benefits me the most financial. I work as a part time accountant in order to pay the bills. I have a few animals I personally keep but a great deal of the animals I work with are animals that need to be relocated to new owners.

Well of I had more room and experience I'd say send some this way. I have my snakes out on almost a daily basis. The days off like today are a lil more relaxed. And congrats on the criminology degree thing.

Re: College People with snakes
Thanks. I recommend every American should take at least a couple criminology or deviant behavior classes in their life, the knowledge you gain is almost priceless and really helps you sort through the facts when watching the news or shows like Law and Order.

Re: College People with snakes
I'm 26 and finishing a BS in Wildlife Ecology at good ol' UF (Go Gators!). I've been going straight through in college since 2004 without taking summers off, so I'll be looking forward to a break come end of this summer. I have about 40 snakes (plus seasonal babies), rat rack, and an opossum. Somehow I manage to find time to take care of them all. Though I am pretty lazy and tend to waste too much time surfing the net or answering emails. I'll get around to cleaning my snake room once a week or spot check waters every 10-14 days.
Fuglyfarmhand - You'd think zoo jobs would pay well, but they're only slightly above minimum wage (unless you work for Disney). I went to a zoo training program here in Gainesville, so I'm pretty familiar with how zoos operate and what to expect. I have it to fall back on in case I don't get a state/fed biologist position. Like Escabel, I'd much rather be outside in the field catching wild animals, getting bit, and having a blast than being stuck inside a herp house.
El Escabel - if you want to work for the Park Service or Forestry Service have you looked into a Ecology, Wildlife or Natural Resource Management, or Enviro Science degree? That would probably apply better than a general Bio degree. My major is geared toward putting students in a wildlife biologist or national park position when you graduate.
Adrya - Congrats on the position in the Entomology museum! I earned a great deal of respect and interest in insects after taking an Intro to Entomology class.

Ok the como zoo in St.Paul Mn just hired a herp guy that I have some contact with and yes with his degrees and all he only brings in about 48-50k a yr. So compared to some other jobs that aint all that bad. I can understand if other places don't give that but it was an option to fall back on or make contacts too. I wish I had 1/2 the "book smarts" people like you and everyone else that is takin a bio class does. I'm more hands on and learn better that way. All I'm taking after welding school is a business management course so I can better understand the financial end of the business. Call me different but I just wanna weld and make things. I think that's cool.
