Medical Benefits of Pets
Pets do a lot for us. Their companionship helps us all, but children and the elderly seem to have special affinities for the more cuddley pets.
Pets can even in some circumstances reduce anxiety and lower blood pressure.
I think we should be able to get a doctor's prescription for having a pet and then deduct all the food, veterinary, and other upkeep costs, under the medical expenses deduction on our federal income taxes.

Re: Medical Benefits of Pets
Sounds like a great idea.
But, eventually the government will want to control the pets and we will no longer be able to purchase them over the counter. The doctors and whoever else will want to prescribe a certain pet based upon it's potency and ability to heal our specific illness.

I love that idea! Pets totally help with health. My mom and I get massages every few months and after my mom got her dog, her masseuse noticed that she carried less stress in her back than before.

Re: Medical Benefits of Pets
that would be suuuch a good idea.
pets definetly slow your heart rate, calm you down, relax you, comfort you when your lonely, i could go on forever!
the thing is, some people might not be able to take care of the pet or might be allergic. or something.
i would sooo be in for it.

Under some state laws you can deduct dog food for your dog. It can be considered an alarm system. The state of MN does have the clause on the books that you can deduct $48 a month on taxes for dog food if you own a dog and your dwelling. You cannot do it if you live in a condo or apartment. You have to own your house.

Dang, I need to move back there.
$48 a month times 12 months = $576 a year, times 8 years = $4608.
Heck I could buy a used HD for that. then it would be free.

Re: Medical Benefits of Pets
Ya we just found that out last yr. We raise shepards and the accountant said to help with the food bill we could use the dog food like a security system. I didn't know it til last yr. Wish I could do that for snakes. That would really lighten the food load.
P.S. How's the sick snakie?

It appears to be a deduction, not a credit, so your gain depends on your bracket.

Re: Medical Benefits of Pets
It was something for property taxes. I think it was like in the upgrade of the property and security. Here you can get a tax write off for putting up a fence that you can't see thru. You don't get much but you do get it back on property taxes.
I just wish I could get a perscription for a moonglow to get rid of high blood pressure. They are relaxing.

Re: Medical Benefits of Pets
The dog/cat food manufacturers, the big rodent suppliers, they got bucks. I bet they'd pay a lobbyist if we could get enough people interested in a tax break. I definitely spend a big chunk of my own disposable income for critter food, accessories, and vet bills.
And there is no question that pets are a benefit. This would be a tax break that almost everyone could feel good about.

Re: Medical Benefits of Pets
You can get tax breaks for owning or breeding certain pure-blooded horses. Why not snakes? Seems to me that it would a great way to encourage the breeding of pure locale animals.
