Newly orphaned
My mother died last night. She was 76 and had a massive fatal stroke at the dinner table. Last meal, fish sticks.
I am now parentless; orphaned; the oldest member of my family.
Anyone interested in adopting a low maintenance, sometimes crotchety, 42 year old orphan (wife, 3 kids, and an impending grandchild included)?
I appreciate having friends locally, and a supportive online community in which to share the ups and downs of life.

I appreciate the condolences, but I can't help but notice that neither of you are offering adoption.

Re: Newly orphaned
I'm sorry to hear about your mother. It will be two years that my mother died this spring. It's a challenge to accept that someone who was so much apart of my life was gone. But, it comes to us all at some point. I always tell people now to express their gratitude to their parents for the part they played in their life.
I hope good memories ease your loss.
I'm not sure if you would want me to adopt you. You would have to provide your own plane ticket to come out and meet your new younger adoptive dad.

Re: Newly orphaned
I guess I'll have to suck it up and become the senior member of the family. Besides, it would be unfair to ask anyone to feed these bottomless pit kids of mine.

Re: Newly orphaned
Sorry to hear about your Mom. Both of my grandfathers had strokes. One never recovered. And my other made it through but with severe loss of motor control in the right side of his body. His leg gave out one day while my mom and I were visiting causing him to break his hip, he passed away shortly after.
Might have been for the best, it's hard recovering from a stroke...

Re: Newly orphaned
Different people have different ways of coping with things, and some people like to celebrate a person's life rather than mourn when they pass. Some do it with tears of happiness, some with humor, some with solitude. To each his own. There's no need to "correct" him, you only need to be supportive.
I know that with different family members of mine who have passed, I have mourned differently for each of them. Some with greiving, some with laughter while reminiscing on their life. Each one is different.

I am glad you filled me in. Without your profound insight, I wouldn't have realized that the death of my parent was serious.
One thing about being everyone else but the person who died; life must go on. You accept the loss, mourn the loss, but you must move beyond the loss, or else your own life gets frozen in time. If you're a young person, it can result in "arrested development" and lock you into a perpetual adolescence. A little humor can help soften the hurt and may even mark the first steps of carrying on.

Re: Newly orphaned
Ranger, I can understand your pain and I respect the way you have decided to deal with it.
My darling old Dad died in November and I am still crying (and laughing too) over him and I guess I always will. My Mom (89) is still hanging on. She believes in God and Heaven, thank God. She says she knows where he is, and expects to go there too, and it comforts her.

I haven't lost my parents yet, but when I do it's going to be a very sad day for me, I often don't like to think about it. If when a person loses his sence of humor they often lose themselves. I agree when a loved one does pass you have to remember the good time, and the funny times.
Sometime laughter is the best medice out there.
Sorry Ranger for the rant.
and Again Sorry for your loss.
Do you mind sleeping in a small rat house cause that the only extra room I have.

Re: Newly orphaned
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss Ranger. I personally feel that humor is a great way to deal with tragedy but to each his own.
I'd offer to adopt you, but you'd have to be the one supporting me. I'm a lowly 24 year old college student with two jobs barely making ends meet but I have no problem mothering you!
