just give me MONEY for Xmas
seriously people, sometimes the best christmas gift is money or a gift card. times are tough, and i for one hate standing in the returns line after christmas to return that sweater that is 2 sizes too small or 2 sizes too big.
the perfect gift for me is cold hard cash or giftcards to places i shop where i need stuff. i hate it when people waste their hard earned money on gifts for people that they won't or can't use.
my parents always get me stuff that i can't use or need. this year they got me a portable DVD player...an expensive one too and it doesnt work. they shipped it and i think it got bumped around too much and the screen doesnt work. where will i ever use a portable DVD player? i do not have kids and i don't take trips. i would like to return it or exchange it for something else but my parents did not enclose a receipt. so now i have to contact them to see if they want it shipped back to them (another waste of money on postage) or if they can find the receipt and mail that to me. would have been so much easier to mail a gift card or the $100 so i could spend the cash on stuff i need or want....like a new snake.

Tough luck...and you are so right, but you have to remember that it's not about us, but about what the other people who care about us want to do.

Perhaps you could explain how you feel to your parents if you have not yet done so.
I would suggest approaching them with a grateful tone rather than a grumbling one.

Re: just give me MONEY for Xmas
im kinda 50/50 here. if someone doesnt really know me, then cash is the way to go. but if someone knows me, its kinda interesting to see what they would think i want. and if it is something ironic, or with sentimental value, then so much the better.

Re: just give me MONEY for Xmas
Let me see if I can throw my two cents in to here.
Wasn't Christmas time suppose to be a time of happiness and a time for giving, Who cares if not what you wanted, it was a gift, at least it wasn't a lump of coal.
I too have had gifts that I didn't like or needed But I thank every one the Same.
It is Really hard for people to pick out gifts that are usefull or needed.
Maybe the idea of the dvd player was a hint for you to take a trip back there to see them.
Beside it was the thought that counts.
So instead of whinnig about it call them up and say thank you.

Even if I don't know some one I would rather try to get them something.
Christmas has turned into a joke to some degree, and if you have to get cash then, where is the suprize of getting.

Re: just give me MONEY for Xmas
I personally find it irritating getting a ton of junk that I'll never use for Christmas. It just takes up room I don't have.
I'm not religious and I don't celebrate Christmas in any way but the traditional family gathering, gift giving, and stuffing ourselves with good food. But I LOVE buying gifts, so I don't like to give gift certificates, so I can see why other people don't either. But man, I do prefer them.
