2009 Decisions: Carpet or BCC?
I know I would like another reptile in the future, after I move the rest of my collection to AP cages and somehow, acquire a car.
I'm really interested in carpet pythons, they are really cool! I really like the Jaguars. They are pricey and they are a morph, most other morphs for other species I am not fond of. However, normal is good too. I really like all of them.
I also, would really like a BCC. Either Pulcallpa Peru or a Suriname.
I will probably get one or the other down on the road, but this would be the "next" snake before holding out for a while and wondered which animal you would like to see me post pictures of on here.
I added a 3rd option to the poll, in case of any of you who think I should try a different species other than the 2 mentioned.
I also desperately need a GIRL this time around. My small collection are all %100, sexed males.
Any of your help would be outstanding!
-Rach

Re: 2009 Decisions: Carpet or BCC?
I'm a huge fan of both...although there are lots of things to consider...what subspecies of carpets are you looking into (jungle, irian jaya, coastal...)? Both will be rewarding snakes, although I think the carpet could be a little easier to care for. Also, boas are more reclusive and lazy by nature, while carpets are very active snakes that like to climb, roam, and "show off." I keep/kept both, and love both, but if you already have boa(s), then a carpet would be an interesting and fun change of pace...then again, if you are simply a boa nut (nothing wrong with that ) then you can never go wrong with a nice one of those....ohhh decisions

Re: 2009 Decisions: Carpet or BCC?
So far a carpets go, I really like them all! So all I need to do is decide from there.
I'd kill for a BCC as well, but they are probably more needy, care-wise. From what I've been reading.
Price isn't an issue. I'd shell out for a top-notch BCC or carpet.
I'm still learning about boas from Magni, since he's my first so maybe a good logical step up would be a BCC which are a little more demanding.
I'm sure down the line I will end up with both, but I'm still deciding what I should get FIRST. LOL

Re: 2009 Decisions: Carpet or BCC?
Of course, I'm a huge carpet fan. Most folks I have met who own a carpet are also won over to them. It might be safe to suggest that those who own boas are great fans of them, and that those who own carpets are likewise fans of them.
I've never owned a boa. I have only held friend's boas. They are definitely great snakes. I wouldn't mind having one some day.
I do own two carpets and love them. ( an IJ and an IJ x Jag normal, aka: jag sib). They are definitely active snakes and, as Kyle said, don't mind displaying themselves after about two years of age. Mine rarely use their hide boxes. Both of mine are very handling-tolerant and are quite eager to come out after dark.
Like anything else, people have their own preferences on carpets. I prefer IJs and Coastals to Jungles for my own reasons. Jungles are a bit more of a risk pattern-wise. The really nice looking ones are great, but the ugly ones look like mud to me. They also seem to be a bit more temperamental and prone to stress. I've never seen an ugly coastal (or jaguar for that matter).
Have fun trying to decide.
Here's a picture of my jag sib, Claire:

Re: 2009 Decisions: Carpet or BCC?
Beautiful snakes, guys!
It is really tough to decide. The polls are really close, too.
Kyle, your Girl looks very similar to my male BCI. He gets mistaken for a BCIxBCC cross.
I think Coastals are awesome, too.

Re: 2009 Decisions: Carpet or BCC?
I would also say a carpet. I got my first two and got hooked on them! They are so curious and inquisitive compared to boas. There's pics of my carpets floating around the site, but I'll post my favorite male jungle and one of my centralian carpets.
Now when you start looking for people to get top notch carpets from try:

PLUS, search around the classifieds on Moreliapythons.com for breeders with top notch carpets who don't have websites. Good luck finding a carpet!

Re: 2009 Decisions: Carpet or BCC?
Yep.
AC reptiles is my #1 choice for a carpet. They are located in KC and I believe I've seen some of his animals at the show last time I went. It's been a while though.

Re: 2009 Decisions: Carpet or BCC?
I would say go with a carpet. I have never owned a carpet. The reason I say that is because I have boas and I love them. I always wanted a Sumatran blood. It was kind of my dream snake. I finally got one this year after a lot of searching and I'm so glad I did. I wanted a docile one and also one that was high contrast. She is the special one in my collection - so different than the others - totally different habits and looks. I'll breed the boas and enjoy every minute of caring for them but the blood is my "I've Got You, Babe" pet.

Well, it looks like its a carpet for me.
I have yet to decide which kind. I'm leaning heavily on the coastal carpets!
