Reptile vet vs. Experienced breeder/shop owner

Who would you trust more and why? A regular reptile/exotics vet, or an experienced breeder/owner of one of the largest reptile shops in the county?

What's the subject we're trusting them with (besides the obvious)?

Re: Reptile vet vs. Experienced breeder/shop owner

Things that are snake related I'd say.....whether it be scale rot, bites from mice, mites, etc....?

Re: Reptile vet vs. Experienced breeder/shop owner

Like say a snake got bit by a rat and had mites, would you treat the rat wounds, or the mites, or would mice treatment hurt the rat bites (can't believe I just pulled that one out of the air)?

Re: Reptile vet vs. Experienced breeder/shop owner

I would probably listen to both, but honestly the breeder would hold my attention more.

The vet knows what should work, gives you a few ideas and in many cases never hears the outcome.
The breeder has had experience with the matter of snake 'individuality' and probably has gone through a lot of trial and error until the problem was solved first hand.

That's my opinion.

Re: Reptile vet vs. Experienced breeder/shop owner

If your snake needs medical attention, then it needs a vet. If you need care advice, then you need an experienced breeder or keeper.

Re: Reptile vet vs. Experienced breeder/shop owner

If it's something simple, a breeder would be good for advice, but they still can't provide you with medication. And a vet has gone through VET scool...a lot of breeders never even went to college, I don't think I'd trust someone like that with my pet's health in a serious situation. Not to mention, what breeder knows how to perform surgery or has the correct equipment to do so?
