Swimming Copperheads?
Aparently, a small river doesn't stop copperheads if they want to cross to the other side. I took all three kids to our camp to go swimming in the river today. We were walking upstream to an area you can only get to if you are helicoptor dropped in (no one seriously does that) or if you walk up the river. Alot of rocks along the shore and I figured while the kids are struggling against the stronger part of the current, I am going to shore to look for snakes and turtles as we make our way upstream. I don't see anything along the shore. So we get to this part where there are some "cool rocks" (their words) and we wade out to them. The depth varies greatly from a foot to above my waist as you make your way out.
We start building a tiny boat/raft out of twigs and grass (I still don't know why) to float in the rapids and as I am looking around I am thinking to myself, this is a great place to do some serious herping. So I tell them to be careful of snakes...."sure dad, we aren't going to see any snakes" was the attitude I got. So they work their way back out to the cool rocks in the middle and I wade out and am messing around at some really odd rock formations. I try to work my way back up to them through a deep area and when I do, I look about 2 feet to my right and there is a 3 foot copperhead (yes, I know what a copperhead looks like) swimming toward me in about 3 feet of water. I tell the kids in my calmest voice to "GET OUT OF THE WATER NOW!!!" and I go to move, and that is when the snake sees me and panics and tries to get under a rock. Please keep in mind the snake has been underwater all this time once it saw me. It can get under the rock and I am trying to dance away from it and water and tripping on rocks, splashing like crazy, which causes it to panic more and it gets caught in the current and now is against my legs trying to get away upstream. (yes, actually against my leg with the swift current pushing it against my bare leg.) At that point I stopped dead and the snake managed to get itself off of me and swam with the current down stream.
The kids thought I was nuts when I went back in and tried to find where the little guy ended up.

Yeah, that was my fear (duh, of course, lol). It would have been a small difficulty getting back out to the main road, but then we were about a half an hour from a hospital too.
He was just as freaked out about being against me as I was with him there. He was really struggling with the current or else he might have lashed out at me.
