Both, because they're two completely different snakes and I love them both

Re: Dumerils vs Carpet python

I keep both, and enjoy both...Dums are generally very laid back, they're short, 'stout' snakes, and mine is totally mellow outside the cage, much like most BCI/BCCs I've seen, although he does have an outrageous feeding response. But don't let that discourage you, I've heard of Carpets with totally insane feeding responses, yet mine is a dainty little brat, and will only take food gently right from the tongs without a strike or coil, after she's licked and studied it for about 5-10 minutes!

I voted Carpets though, because I love snakes I can watch cruise and climb and be active in their cages, they make excellent display snakes. My Dum mostly burrows into his substrates and chills in 'ambush' position, he's pretty lazy, but makes a great "lap snake."
Both make excellent pets IMO

Re: Dumerils vs Carpet python

KyleZ summed it up pretty well. I love both, my Dumeril's loves to chill out in my lap, while the carpets I have both cruise around in their cage and hang out in full-view quite often making them excellent display animals for when company's over. I especially love it when they pull a GTP impersonation on their perch.

If she's new, that's probably why. She's just nervous, but if you provide her a perch and lots of climbing material with a good ambient, she should come out and start exploring. My little IJ likes to perch over her hot spot and stare at me.. pretty sure she just wants food

How old is your snake? Babies are known to be significantly nippy, and as they grow older they calm down and are easy to handle snakes. You just have to make sure the enclosure has both arboreal and terrestrial set up. You want stuff for her to climb, and hide logs to hide under. My CP is about 7 feet and loves to climb up her driftwood and lay on it like a true tree snake would... rarely do I find her under her hide log...
