Question Microchipping

I'm trying to figure the pro's and con's of microchipping snakes. Looking into chipping Trinity, my Peru RTB. Are there certain age/length requirements? Any body have good or bad experiences? It's paid off on my dogs already in spades and I like the idea of being able to positively ID Trin if I need to, just in case.

Re: Microchipping

I actually read that chips are causing cancerous tumor growths. I don't really see why you should chip a snake, as it will only stress the snake out... unless you're afraid of it getting out. Chances are IF the snake gets out, someone would probably kill it out of ignorance than call animal control or anything

Re: Microchipping

Is there more than one link to back this up? I mean I can see where it may cause that in a few cases but it shouldn't be common.

I had thought about having this done with my albino boa since I personally am paranoid about somebody breaking into my herp building and stealing her or possibly others. There are cases where valuable snake morphs have been stolen from breeders.

Re: Microchipping

Even if it was stolen, I don't think anyone would think to check a chip for a snake, it's not a GPS unit, it's just if it gets out, animal control can scan and check to see if it actually has a home.

If someone steals it there's no way to know where they took the snake.

Re: Microchipping

Well Florida now requires microchipping on specific large species of snakes, and is looking to expand that list. Other states are following suit. I'm looking into breeding her, and it's definitely a good way to prove she's mine if the question ever came up. My vet says there's an established protocol on chipping snakes, as in all Vets are chipping in the same anatomical areas. Some vets even have ways of marking the site where the animal is chipped, like breeders mark warm bloods for bloodline id and stuff. As I wrote before chipping my dogs has paid off in spades already, and I don't know of any other reliable way to document proof of ownership.

i have all my snakes and monitors chipped. i would make sure if your getting an albino done it is under a darker area of the scales and not the white ones. seems like it leaves a little mark when done under the white and isnt as noticeable where the colored ones are. ive never had any growths on any of mine.
